Random Morning Thoughts
One of my friends emailed me yesterday telling me his misses the genuine randomness in the random thoughts. I found that highly amusing, considering that yesterday’s random thought ending up being truly random (about the elevation of rainbows during varying times of the day).
I was going to write something random today, and then I came across what, for me, is a heartbreaking act of violence. We here in the Gorge are blessed with two Buddhist monasteries: Trout Lake Abbey and Pacific Hermitage. I don’t consider myself a Buddhist, but Buddhists are peaceful folks, intent on spreading peace and tranquility and encouraging others along the path of self-understanding and diminished suffering. They’re kinda like counselors in that way, only they wear funny outfits. Come to think of it, counselors usually do too…
A couple of days ago, Kozen, the Trout Lake abbot, was getting out of his car in Hood River when a 20-something male kicked his door in, bruising and cutting him. This young guy screamed, “You fucking Muslim” and ran off. Yes, this happened in Hood River.
We can’t know where this man picked up these violent sentiments. We can know this: the more we talk of violence, the more we spread hatred and vitriol, the more we create a paradigm of “us v. them”, the more angry and violent the world becomes. Our words have the power to influence the actions of others. When we speak divisively, we drive each other apart. We create space in the world for people to kick in the car doors of gentle old men. By driving people away, we make space for hatred and violence.
Be careful with your words. They have more power than you realize, and they’re contagious. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking
Hmph. You can ride Syncline this morning, and you’ll want to do it this morning before it rains this afternoon. After today, you can write off all the trails until probably Friday or so, as we’re heading into a period of downpour starting relatively early on Wednesday. As for the road biking, well, today looks okay (light wind, not wet) after it warms up, but it’s going to rain this afternoon, so be prepared!
