Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Hi skiers, riders, and Nordic folks! As forecast, the precipitation type has been bouncing around on Mt. Hood today. It’ll fall just low enough for accumulation of dense, wet snow over the next several days at most of the resort elevations. Thursday looks coldest. Base of Skibowl and Teacup are going to see variable precip types except on Thursday, most likely. Starting Friday afternoon, the weather turns warmer. Models disagree on how rainy it will be. Next week: probably very warm on the slopes, but also potentially sunny.

Let’s reign it in here and talk about the time frame where things are pretty certain. Mixed precip Monday evening transitions to snow overnight. About 0.6” water equivalent (WE) is forecast overnight. Call it 2-4” wet snow at 5000′. Wind: WSW 20-30 all night. Tuesday starts with light snowfall, turns clear above 6000′ or so, and stays cloudy down low. A few flurries are possible overnight. The snow level will be 4500′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. About 0.3” WE is forecast in the morning for 2-3” dense snow. Overnight: just a trace after midnight. Wind: WSW 15-25 in the morning, SW 15-25 in the afternoon, and SSW 10-20 after midnight.

Wednesday looks snowy. The snow level will be 4000′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ after midnight. Temps at 5000′ will be in the low 30’s to start and will fall to the upper 20’s. About 0.7” WE is forecast during the day for 5-6” dense new snow. Overnight, another 0.3” WE slightly less cement-like precipitation arrives for about 3” new. Wind: SSW 10-20 in the morning, WSW 20-30 in the afternoon, and SW 10-20 after midnight. A dry start to Thursday gives way to light snowfall with a couple inches of new and moderate wind. Snow level 300-3500′. Friday also starts dry and then turns warm and rainy. Models do not agree at all on how rainy it will be and for how long it will be rainy. But rainy it looks. And then potentially warm and sunny. Ah, sun would be nice! Enjoy the slopes!

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
