Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Good morning, mountain shredders! Our ski resorts are taking things day by day right now as they wait to see how the snowpack sets up after being saturated by rain. As of 6am today, temps were below freezing up there, and the sky was clear. That’ll give the snowpack a chance to take advantage of radiational cooling and freeze. And that might allow it to support grooming. Stay tuned to the resort websites for updates. Looking at the forecast, we’ll stay too warm for snow accumulation through at least the 21st. At that point, the Euro and GFS diverge wildly – the GFS brings snow back. The Euro brings back some moisture but keeps things too warm for snow on the slopes. We’ll just keep an eye on those models – they’ll converge eventually. In the meantime…

Tuesday starts cool and clear and warms up during the day. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 3500′ this morning and 10,000′ this afternoon and night. No precip. Wind: E 15 to start, SE 20 in the afternoon, and S 15-25 overnight. Wednesday starts sunny and turns high overcast. The FAF will be 10,000′ all day and will drop to 8000′ after midnight. With those high clouds around, temps are likely to stay above freezing all night, and slopes may not refreeze after the warm (upper 30’s) daytime weather. Wind: S 15-25 in the morning and SW 15-25 from mid-afternoon on.

A weak weather system may or may not bring some light rain (perhaps a tenth of an inch) to the slopes on Thursday. About half the ensembles bring measurable rain. The snow level will be 8000′ early, 6500′ in the afternoon, and back to 8500′ overnight under clearing sky. Wind: SW 15-25 all day turning to SE 10-20 after midnight. Friday looks clear and warn with the freezing level rising to 11,000′. Ditto on Saturday and Sunday daytime. Sometime between Sunday and Tuesday, moderate rain returns to the slopes. Given that scenario, we turn our attention to the week of the 21st. Everyone stand up and vote for the GFS and its enthusiastic return to snowfall. Ignore the Euro – it keeps us mired in this too-warm pattern past Christmas, at least. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some dryland training to do. Join me!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Want wind? Ma Nature has wind for you – six days of easterlies are on tap. Wednesday and perhaps Friday will be the strongest days, but the rest should have average speeds at 30 or better. High temps will be maxing out in the mid 40’s. This isn’t your typical mid-winter, ice-cold easterly setup.

Tuesday kicks off with pressures of 30.20/30.33/30.35 for gradients of 0.13 and 0.02. Prior to dawn, easterlies were 20mph at Viento, 20-25 at Stevenson, and 30 at Iwash (Rooster). Give it a few hours. The wind picks up to a solid 20 or a bit more at Viento, 25-30 at Stevenson, and 40 at Iwash. River flow yesterday was 81-123kcfs, river temp is 47F, and high temp forecast is 45F with sunshine in the windy zone.

Wednesday starts with 20-25 at Viento, 30-35 at Stevenson, and 40-45 at Iwash. Afternoon wind falls to 15-20 at Viento, 25-30 at Stevenson, and 35-40 at Iwash. Looks like a nice day for that Home Valley downwinder you’ve been craving. High temp: 43F under high overcast sky. Thursday looks a bit lighter: 20-25 max at Iwash and Stevenson with high temp sin the mid 40’s under cloudy sky with a slight chance of drizzle. Friday: 40. Saturday: 35. Sunday: 30. Those last three forecasts are for Iwash Rock and are subject to change. Essentially, it looks windy for six days in a row. Enjoy!
