Gorge Wind Forecast

An unseasonably strong and wet weather system moves in this evening bringing rain as far east as The Dalles. Westerlies pick up ahead of this system, and then shift eastward for the next couple of days as clouds linger in the western Gorge.

Light and variable wind through the whole Gorge Tuesday morning starts to pick up late morning ahead of a warm front. By noon, we’ll have 18-22 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 12-15 east of there. Wind speeds continue to rise until the rain arrives around 5pm. Max today: 18-22 in the west and 24-27 from Rowena to Arlington. River flow: 131kcfs. Temps: 66 degrees.

Clouds and sprinkles in the western Gorge on Wednesday morning shift the wind to the east. You’ll find light west wind from Stevenson to The Dalles with gusty 18-22 east of there early. Afternoon westerlies pick up to 12-15 in the west and gusty 24-27 from Mosier to Arlington.

Thursday starts with 7-10 int eh west and light westerlies east of Hood River. By noon, the wind rises to 17-20 from Stevenson to Avery. It holds at 17-20 in the west under partly cloudy sky and picks up to 24-27 from Rowena to Rufus. It’s worth noting that models are bouncing around a lot from day to day, so there’s probably not that much accuracy in the forecast beyond today. That said, the general picture for the weekend is strong enough westerlies for a no-hitch KB4C.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Tuesday: S10/S10/S5-10, SW swell 2′ at 17 seconds. Wednesday: LTW/LTW/LTW, SW 7′ @ 9. Thursday: W5/NW5/N15-20, SW 5′ @ 9. Jones Tuesday: nope. Wednesday: 5-8. Thursday: 10-13. Sauvie’s Tuesday through Thursday: nope, nada, and nothing.

Road and Mountain Biking

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill!
