Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s a rainy morning on Mt. Hood, but there’s hope for snow in the near future: a strong cold front swings through on Friday and drops at least some of the good stuff. Models are all over the place on how much. Between today and Friday, Wednesday and Thursday, to be precise, the mountain will have sunny, above freezing weather. After Friday, we enter a period of active weather. Models bounce the temps around quite a bit; it appears we’ll see periods of snow and periods of rain. 50th percentile snowfall totals through 1/1: 4-13”. 90th percentile: 11-26”.

So today, Tuesday, will be drizzly on the mountain. About 0.2” rain had already fallen as I was writing this, and another 0.3” to 0.4” is forecast today. Rain should end by sunset. The snow level will be 6500′ for the 24 hour period. Sounds like Meadows has a new and creative action they’re taking: they’re hauling snow from the upper mountain to the lower mountain to keep things going. Wind today: SSW 20-40 early becoming SW 15-30 early afternoon and dropping to S 5-10 overnight.

Wednesday will be cloudy early and sunny from mid-morning on. The free air freezing level starts at 6500′, climbs to 7500′ in the afternoon, and rises to 8000′ overnight. Wind: S or SW at 5-10mph all day. Thursday will be sunny all day. The free air freezing level will be 8000′ in the morning, 7500′ in the afternoon, and 6500′ overnight. The next weather system arrives sometime after midnight. It may start as rain (just 0.1” overnight), but it will quickly switch to snow.

Friday morning starts with rain and switches to snow around sunrise. Snow continues all day and at least part of the night. The snow level will be 6500′ early, 4500′ around sunrise, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. Models are all over the place on snowfall from this system. They do suggest about a quarter inch of rain or mixed precip before the switch. After that, for now, let’s call it 6-8” and adjust as we get closer. Wind: SW 15-30 early turns to NW 35-40 mid-morning and fades to NW 25-30 in the afternoon. That wind could drive up the snowfall intensity thanks to orographics. Saturday looks dry, cool, and sunny. Sunday starts dry, cool, and sunny and warms up some in the afternoon with high clouds moving in ahead of the next system. We’ll leave it there for now. Happy shredding!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Three days of easterlies are followed by the potential for a west wind day on Friday thanks to a cold front sweeping through the Gorge. Fingers crossed! After that, colder weather (and easterlies) sticks around for a while. Tuesday starts with E 45 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and E 25 at Stevenson with heavy rain in the western Gorge. Expect rain in the windy zones through late afternoon. Easterlies fall to 25mph at Iwash and Stevenson by early afternoon and drop to 20-25 later. River flow in the daylight hours yesterday was 139-144kcfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast is 42F.

Wednesday starts with 25-30 at Iwash and 25 at Stevenson. The wind holds all day. Expect sun in the windy zones with a high temp in the mid 40’s. Thursday starts with 40 at Iwash and 25 at Stevenson. Stevenson rises to 25-30, and Iwash falls to 30-35 early afternoon. Stevenson drops to 25 later. High temp: 44F with sun in the windy zones. Friday sees a cold front sweep across the Cascades. As of this morning, the timing looks good for a west wind day, but models are all over the place on strength. For now, let’s call it gusty 22-26 from Stevenson to Rufus and likely Arlington too. With high pressure building offshore behind this system, the wind is likely to last most of the day. I’m definitely crossing my fingers for that! See you on the water!
