Gorge Wind Forecast

Looks like we’re headed into a nice long stretch of west wind. Starting today, a coastal trough will start pushing marine air into the metro area, with the extent of that marine air increasing each day. As temps drop in the west, they remain hot in the east, generating low pressure in the desert.

So, for Tuesday, we start with gradients of .08 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc). River flow is a weak 113kcfs, and temp is 68 degrees. We’ll see the westerlies build to 20-23 from Stevenson to Hood River by noon, In an interesting twist, the models push the stronger wind east today, with 24-27 this afternoon from Lyle to Rufus with 13-16 at Arlington. The western Gorge, Stevenson to Mosier, appears to hold at 20-23. Interesting…

Deeper marine air infiltrates Portland on Wednesday, bumping up the gradients and wind speed. We’ll start with 18-22 from Viento to Mosier and 12-15 east and west of those locations. The wind will quickly build to 24-28 from Stevenson to Rufus with 10-13 east of John Day Dam.

Marine air might increase enough for clouds in the western Gorge on Thursday morning, and you know what that means: wind! We’ll start with dawn patrol at 22-25 from Viento to Mosier. The wind builds to 24-28 from Stevenson to Rufus with 13-16 way out east. Copy that forecast for Friday.

BONUS: Jones Tuesday: 23-26. Wednesday: 23-26. Thursday: 21-24. Sauvie’s Tuesday: 13-16. Wednesday: 15-18. Thursday: 12-15. Coast (north/central/south). Tuesday: W5/N5/25-30, NW swell 5′ at 8 seconds. Wednesday: 10-15/20-25/30+, NW 5′ @ 8. Thursday: 15-20/25-30/35+, NW 5′ @ 8.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the things I find bizarre about being a human is the fact that it’s entirely possible to forget what it feels like to be happy. That’s just weird, right? And it’s also possible to be happy in the presence of certain things one day and not the next.

While I disagree that being ‘happy all the time’ is an effective life goal, I do believe that it’s helpful to be able to access happiness or other positive feelings. Here’s a secret for you: those feelings arise from within us, not from without. Sounds trite, right, but the implication is that we can train the mind to create the life we want. Do stop and think about this, please, because having faith in this can change your life.

Shall I repeat? Your emotions arise from within you, not from without.

If your mind feels rather out of control (as most minds do), you can go on a hunt for a different experience within you. Have a seat, and start to scan your body with your mind. Pay very, very, very close attention to each part of your body.

Notice if there are locations that feel different – more relaxed, calmer, quieter, happier… then focus all your attention on one of those spots. Notice the temperature, weight, sensations, sense of energy, color, etc. Really familiarize yourself with this spot in your body that’s giving you a different experience than the one you were having previously. Five bucks says you just created a different emotional state (briefly, anyway), than you were experiencing. See – emotions come from within. You have more control than you think. May you be at peace. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

Plains of Abraham is open. It joins Gunsight to complete our slate of open mountain bike rides. Get out and get some, and take plenty of water because it’s going to be hot. Trails in Hood River County are now closed to motorized use due to fire danger. Bicycles are fine.

Upcoming Events

Community activities today start with sunrise moving meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at 6:15 this morning. There’s another group sit this evening at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30 with the monks from Pacific Hermitage. At 5:30 tonight, HAVEN in The Dalles has a free yoga class. Mountain biking for kids happens tomorrow night at 6 at Post Canyon’s Family Man – take the whole family up there to ride on the dirt and eat free snacks.

This week, all week long, is the Gorge Downwind Champs based out of Hood River’s Waterfront Park. They’ll be running downwind shuttles for participants every day from Stevenson and Home Valley to Hood River, so watch out for lots of SUP, surfski, and outrigger traffic headed east. Their race window starts Thursday, and given the forecast, it’s likely to happen, so be especially avoid ant of the boats that day!

One last thing, Hood River County’s at Fire Level 3 now, so motorized use of trails is prohibited on all county lands. Whoopdee and Hospital Hill usually follow soon, so ride them while you still can.

Have an awesome day today!
