Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s a drizzly start to Tuesday on Mt. Hood, and there will be plenty of drizzle in the next several days on the mountain. Models disagree… actually, products within models disagree on the snow level. Given the overall setup, rain is likelier than snow for much of the next four days.

Tuesday looks drizzly. The snow level will be 6500′ all day and 7000′ overnight. About 0.1” rain falls during the day, and another 0.2” rain falls overnight. Wind will be SE 15 early, SE 5 in the afternoon, and SW 15-20 after midnight.

Model products disagree on the snow level on Wednesday. Predictions range from 5000′ to 6000′. I think we’re probably going to see drizzle, or at best, mixed precipitation. The snow level will be 7000′ early, 6000′ midday, and 4500′ or so after midnight when the sky will briefly clear. About 0.4” water value (WV) falls as rain or mixed precip during the day. Another 0.3” WV falls as mixed precip overnight. No accumulation at 5000′. Wind will be SW 15-20 in the morning, WSW 25-30 in the afternoon, and SW 10 overnight.

Thursday starts off clear and quickly turns wet. Model products again disagree on the 5000′ temps. Most likely scenario: rain during the day, mixed precip overnight. Snow level 6000′ in the morning and 4000′ after midnight. About 0.2” rain falls during the day. 0.3” to 0.4” WV falls as mixed precip overnight for up to 1” of new snow before the sky clears after midnight. Wind will be SW 10-15 for the 24 hour period.

Friday looks quite similar to Thursday, but the mixed precip should switch to snow in the evening. Up to 3” new will fall by Saturday morning. As of right now, models are predicting a few inches of snow during the day on Saturday.

Gorge Wind

A series of low pressure systems offshore will limit Gorge wind for the next several days. The exception to this is Wednesday afternoon when a frontal passage will up the wind in the eastern Gorge for a few hours. For Tuesday, we’ll have light easterlies in the morning, calm wind midday, and light westerlies after 5pm. By light, I mean 5-10mph or less. River flow is 126kcfs and river temp is 45 degrees.

Wednesday sees a front move across the Cascades. The day starts with W 5-10 in the western Gorge and W 13-17 east of Rowena. After noon, the wind picks up to 10-13 in the west and gusty 23-28 from Rowena to Arlington. Strongest wind will be between 2pm and 5pm, and will probably require pre-emptive driving for the best results. Thursday looks truly light and variable: light easterlies in the western Gorge and light westerlies west of Rowena.

Hood River Weather Forecast

It’s cloudy out there, and it shall stay that way for a couple days. For Tuesday, we’ll have light rain showers. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and low 60’s later. Light east wind turns westerly after 5pm. 14% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks drizzly through early afternoon and then showery. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and low 60’s later. Moderate west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Thursday starts dry and cloudy and then turns showery after noon. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and upper 50’s later. Road and Mountain Biking

If you’re looking for mountain biking, you’ll want to get out now and get it. Plenty of rain this week will take away newly accessible Post, making it muddy and susceptible to damage. For now, we have Syncline, Hospital Hill and Columbia Hills. No report on lower Buck Creek. Seven Streams is open, but there are reports of snow on 8 Track and Spaghetti Factory. Gravel grinding and road biking are also options. The “Sunday Service” mixed surface rides start this weekend at Dirty Fingers.

Upcoming Events

It’s Tuesday. There’s Zen meditation at Trinity Body Arts at 6am, free yoga at HAVEN in The Dalles at 5:30pm, and meditation with the Pacific Hermitage Monk(s) at 6:30pm at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The movie “The Bikes of Wrath” ($10) plays at Columbia Center for the Arts on Wednesday. Next Saturday is the Gorge Gravel Grinder (sold out) and Hood River Appreciation Day at Meadows (not possible to sell out). Pacific Hermitage has a potluck (10:30) and garden party (1pm) on Saturday.
