Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Looks like we have a couple more sunny days on the mountain, and with cooler air headed this way, the snow just might last longer on Wednesday. Models are hinting at a bit of snow Wednesday night followed by a dry day Thursday and a return to precip (mixed, then snow) on Friday night. After that: intermittent snowfall for a while (most likely), but it’s worth noting that there’s quite a bit of spread in forecast temps for the mountains through the end of the month.

Let’s start with Monday night: clear with light wind. The snow should snap again overnight. Tuesday will be sunny all day. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 10,000′ all day and 9000′ after midnight. Wind: W 10 in the morning, SW 20-30 in the afternoon, and WSW 15-20 after midnight. If you’re going, go as early as you can and wax yellow.

Wednesday will be sunny in the morning. A few high clouds drift in during the afternoon, and some snow is possible overnight. The freezing level will be 9000′ in the morning and 6500′ in the afternoon. When the precip arrives, the snow level will drop to 4000′ with temps at 0C at 5000′. Up to 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast overnight for 1-2” of heavy snow. Wind: WSW 15-20 in the morning, SW 25-35 in the afternoon, and W 25-30 overnight.

Thursday currently looks to bring a little light snowfall early followed by clear sky in the afternoon. The freezing level will be 4000′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 6500′ overnight. Wind: S 25-30 in the morning becoming SW 10 in the afternoon and evening. Clouds on Friday give way (probably) to a wetter system on Friday night. That may start with rain or mixed precip, but it’ll transition to snow. Additional moderate snowfall is currently forecast for the weekend. So much for spring/summer! Gorge Wind Forecast

Monday was about as calm as it can get. Say goodbye to glassy conditions (mostly) for the next few days. Welcome in some westerlies instead. Tuesday will start calm, but it won’t stay that way. Thanks to cooler air pushing in from the west and the heat low moving to the desert, the wind will turn onshore. By late morning, we’ll have 10-13 from Stevenson to Swell. Early afternoon: 16-19 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Late in the afternoon, the wind drops west of Mosier to 11-14 and holds near Rowena. River flow Monday was 101-131kcfs, river temp is 44.96F, and high temp forecast is 74F. Let me point out that 74 plus 44.96 is more than 100. You’re welcome!

Wednesday starts with 11-14 from Stevenson to Swell. Hood River will likely be under the clouds. The wind ramps up during the day and eventually reaches 24-27 from Stevenson to Arlington. Please, please, please let the forecast stay the same in upcoming model runs! High temp: 59F. Thursday starts with light west wind, less than 10mph. Afternoon: 14-17 from Lyle to Arlington. High temp: 58F with rain near Hood River through early afternoon.

Rain moves in after midnight. Temps start in the upper 40’s and rise to the upper 50’s. Moderate westerlies early. Moderately strong westerlies in the afternoon. No rainbows. Thursday will be drizzly through early afternoon. Temps start in the mid 40’s and rise to the upper 50’s. Light westerlies early. Moderate westerlies later. 94% chance of rainbows. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.  

Cycling

We have reports of brown pow in Post Canyon to 8-Track. Whoopdee, Hospital, and Syncline are also good for riding right now per Strava (the app, not my cat). Sisterwives and Kleeway in Post Canyon are currently closed for rebuilding. Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing (or sunny) when you go to ride; freeze-thaw trails are susceptible to permanent damage. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
