Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Hello skiers, riders, and Nordic folks! There’s some good-looking groom all across the mountains right now. Get it Tuesday morning before it gets buried by a wide variety of precip types. Be prepared to give some grace to the resorts again this week. It’s going to be another rough one. Being kind will make you and them feel better. Attacking the resorts and their staff won’t make you or anyone else feel better. Try it out. Thank them for their efforts at storm recovery and communication, and see how that affects your heart. We’re all doing our best to get the slopes open, and Mother Nature is doing her best to keep us from doing so. K? We good?

Wednesday starts out sunny and adds high clouds in the afternoon. Overnight? What a mess. Rain, freezing rain, and then perhaps some snow. This is going to ice up the lifts real, real bad. Expect 0.3” to 0.4” mixed wintry precip overnight. Wind: W 15 in the morning, SW 10-20 in the afternoon, and SW 25-40 overnight.

Snow starts the day on Wednesday, but that turns to mixed precip and then probably snow, but perhaps just snain. The snow level will be 4000′ early and will quickly jump to 5500′. Overnight, it falls to 4500-5000′. Any snow that accumulates will be quite wet. Prior to dawn on Wednesday, 0.6” water equivalent (WE) falls as snow and then mixed precip. During the day, another 0.6” WE is forecast as snow above 5500-6000′ and snain, rain, or ice down low (depends on whether there are pockets of cold air remaining at low elevations). Overnight: another 0.9” WE as mixed precip then snow. This is going to make a huge mess of the lifts. Again, show the resorts and their staff, some grace, please. Thursday: snow transitioning to rain. Lordy. What a week. Make the most of it!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends. Guess what? Easterlies! Tuesday brings 60mph all day at Iwash. Stevenson: 35-40. River flow Monday was 72-147kcfs, river temp is 40.46F, and high temp forecast is 16F. Wednesday starts with E50 at Iwash and E 35 at Stevenson. The wind drops to 15 at Iwash in the afternoon and 20-25 at Stevenson. Models suggest a period of westerlies from Iwash to Swell or Hood River overnight (25-30ish) which will be gone by the time you wake up Thursday. High temp: probably sub-freezing during the day, but probably popping above freezing overnight and dropping back to freezing in the morning. Thursday: light/variable at Iwash building to E 55 in the afternoon. East of Hood River: E 15-25. Stevenson: E 30. Hmph. That’s going to do some major damage after the ice storm. High temp: 30-something? I dunno. Too cold for me to get on the water!

Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information.
