Gorge Wind Forecast
Good morning, everyone! Whatever this stomach bug is that’s going around, I suggest you don’t get it. I’m still sick, but yesterday I couldn’t even sit up long enough to write this forecast. Today I’m just running for the toilet. Good thing it isn’t windy – choosing between paddling and toilet proximity would suck! Too much information? Oh, sorry. Anyway, our best chance for wind in the next few days is tomorrow thanks to a low crossing the Cascades. Timing and path will be everything…
Not much happens on Tuesday. Pressures start at 29.96/29.97/29.97 for gradients of E 0.01 and 0.00. Wind was basically calm to start the day. We’ll go from light/variable to light westerlies midday. Afternoon wind picks up to W 13-16 from Avery to Rufus. Elsewhere: less than 10mph. River flow yesterday was 53-72kcfs, river temp is 67F, and high temp forecast is 65F.
As I mentioned in the opening paragraph, we have a compact and strong low pressure system slated to move inland on Wednesday. This little guy’s path, as of this morning, is forecast to be directly over the Columbia River. Weak high pressure should build in behind it offshore. Timing is everything. As of this morning, the timing looks good. The day starts with easterlies at 20-25 from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Stevenson. By early afternoon, the wind switches to W 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles. As the low crosses the Cascades mid-afternoon, we’ll have a shot at gusty 23-26 from Lyle to Arlington. At that point, areas west of Lyle drop to 10-13. High temp: 60F.
Thursday’s wind looks calm. The next chance for westerlies, according to the ensembles, is late in the weekend or early next week. About 50% of them have something worthy happening on Monday. Have a great day today!

Thursday will be mostly dry, but may have some mist in the morning. Low clouds early give way to partly cloudy sky. Temps start in the upper 40’s and rise to the low 60’s. The Post Canyon AirJam is September 30th at Extended Play.
Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club has their weekly workout at Mayer Park at 6pm on Tuesday. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Paddle folks (OC/Surfski) meet at the Hatch Thursday evenings for laps. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.
Cycling
As of September 9th, Hospital Hill has reopened. No official word yet on Whoopdee and Underwood. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
