Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

Clear and sunny weather sticks around for three days on the mountain, and there’s not much more snow than “nothing” in the forecast for the next seven days; a few inches may or may not fall on Saturday night. So, it’s a week of spring skiing conditions. You’ll ride it and like it, ‘cuz that’s what you’re getting! Nordic conditions should be hard, fast, and excellent in the mornings, and you Meadows hiker folks will want to keep an eye out for the possibility of Superbowl this week.

Looking at Tuesday, all we have is sunshine. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 500′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: NW 10 in the morning, W 5 in the afternoon, and light and variable overnight.

Wednesday will be sunny and warmer. The FAF will be 8000′ in the morning, 10,000′ in the afternoon, and 9500′ overnight. 5000′ temps will climb near 50F! Wind: light and variable early, SW 5-10 in the afternoon, and SW 10-20 overnight. Thursday looks clear all day and partly cloudy overnight as a dry cold front swings through. The FAF will be 9500′ in the morning, 8000′ in the evening, and 4500′ after midnight. Wind: SW 10-20 in the morning, W 20 in the afternoon, and SW 10-15 overnight. Friday also looks sunny. Saturday turns cloudy in the afternoon and may pick up a couple inches of snow overnight.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies continue today and Thursday with a day of easterlies sandwiched in between Tuesday’s details: the day starts with gradients of .10/.01 (which took some searching this morning with many of the NWS links down). That setup says, “Corridor”, and the early wind agrees – 16-19 from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-13 east of there. Full sunshine today combines with offshore high pressure of 1044 and a ridge that tilts positive for increasingly gusty westerlies. We’ll see the wind hold at 16-19 from Viento to Mosier this morning. It may bump up to the 18-21 range from Stevenson to Mosier late morning, perhaps to Doug’s. However, it’s likely the wind will fade east of Mosier this afternoon. River flow is 99,100cfs, river temp is 45F, and high temp forecast is 57F.

Wednesday starts with E 10-15 from Rooster to Viento with calm wind everywhere else. The wind builds to 20-25 between Rooster and Stevenson with 15-20 at Viento late morning before turning calm late afternoon. High temp: 67F. Thursday sees a weak/dry front approaching from the NW. This increases the thermal gradient and gives another round of moderate to strong, gusty westerlies. The day starts with 12-15 all through the Gorge. By mid-morning, the wind climbs to gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 10-13 east of there. Afternoon wind fades to gusty 12-16 in the west with gusty 24-27 from Mosier to Arlington. High temp: 65F.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

On vacation until the end of snowsports season. Will return in April or May.

Thursday will also be sunny all day. Partly cloudy sky returns overnight. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and mid 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate to strong westerlies. NO rainbows.

Cycling

Cows are out on Hospital Hill. No parking at the corral. No dogs on the trails. No exceptions. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they let us use their land, and in return, we respect their rules! Post Canyon: GP is still CLOSED. Those of you riding it are doing significant damage to freshly-shaped and not-yet-compacted trail. All that work you’re destroying is being done by about three volunteers. STOP. They anticipate they’ll be able to reopen the trail in the next couple of weeks, but if you keep riding it, it’s going to take longer. Other news: Mountain View Cycles women’s ride starts up this Thursday. Bottom of Post at 5:30pm. Dirty Fingers has Sunday gravel rides.
