Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
This storm did the mountains proud. Daytime snowfall yesterday was a bit less than expected, but the slopes still picked up about two feet that contains 3” water equivalent. That’s great news for farmers, and it’s also good news for fire season. If the lifts can run today, there will be some great powder in wind-protected areas. We then see a fabulous early morning on Wednesday before temps skyrocket in the hills and turn the fresh snow to sticky mush on Wednesday afternoon into Thursday. The weather then turns much cooler (snow level 2500′ or less) from Friday on through the middle of next week. Precip quantities are not yet known, but any precip should fall as snow.
Tuesday starts off with the tail end of the storm. High pressure quickly pushes inland this afternoon and clears the sky. The snow level will be 1500′ this morning, 2000′ this afternoon, and the free air freezing level will be 0′ tonight. About 0.2” water equivalent is forecast this morning before the snow stops. That gives us another 2-3” powder. Wind will be WNW 40 (problematic) early, WNW 30 midday (less problematic, but not great), and WNW 20 this afternoon (better). Overnight, the wind drops to the variable-to-10mph range.
Wednesday starts clear, turns high overcast in the afternoon, and becomes clear again overnight. The big news is the temp swing: -4C in the morning, +6C in the afternoon, and +12C by Thursday morning. In other words, get it early, because temps will warm to the 40’s in the afternoon and make the snow unbearably sticky. Wind: variable to 10mph in the morning and SW 5-15 from the afternoon on through the evening. Teacup, FYI, plans to have fresh groom on Wednesday morning.
Thursday will be warm and sunny. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 11,000′ all day with max temps well into the 50’s. No precip. Wind: SW 5-15 during the day and W 30-35 overnight as the next system arrives. Friday may start with a trace of rain, but that will switch to snow in the afternoon. We’ll pick up a couple inches of snow into Saturday with the snow level falling to 1000-1500′. Cool weather sticks around through (perhaps) the middle of next week, after which forecast uncertainty rises. Enjoy this late-season powder storm today!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Strong westerlies continue today, and then we switch back to easterlies for the next couple of days. Give the weather a couple hours, and the rain will stop. Then you’ll know where to go. Drive east, and you’ll find 28-33 from mid-morning on between Avery and Boardman. The western Gorge gets gusty 22-25. As high pressure pushes inland, the wind is likely to turn a bit gusty everywhere, and the western Gorge may see a dip. Afternoon: 18-23 from Stevenson to Avery with 26-30 from Maryhill to Boardman. River flow is 160kcfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast is 52F.
Wednesday starts sub-freezing with easterlies at 25-30 from Rooster to Stevenson. Viento: 20-25. Afternoon wind drops to 20-25 at Stevenson and holds at 25-30 at Rooster. East of Viento, the wind picks up to E 7-10mph. High temp: 63F. Thursday starts with 35-40 at Rooster, 30-35 at Stevenson, and 20-25 at Viento. East of there: light. The wind starts a steady fade mid-morning. By afternoon, you’ll have 10-15 at Stevenson, 10mph at Rooster, and calm wind to the east. Westerlies are in the forecast for Friday and Saturday.

Cycling
It’s too wet to ride everywhere on the trails. Please don’t. If you ride in the mud, you not only mess up your bike, you do significant damage to the trails. Your brown pow is coming. Go shred the mountain until the trails dry out! Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, judging by Strava.
