Tuesday. Lots o’ wind this week.

Looks like Mother Nature is lining things up for a windy three days in the Gorge. That means that you may want to unline your stuff up for either Wednesday or Thursday, if you like strong wind. As for the weekend, well, models are in disagreement, so we’ll wait another day to chat about that.…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

The river temp, before I forget, is bathwater warm: 73 degrees. The river flow is late-summer low: 124kcfs. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

On tap for today is a weak and dry weather disturbance this afternoon. That’ll do two things: make the wind pick up, and make the wind gusty and unreliable. This morning brings 13-16 from Viento to Mosier with a bit less wind east and west of that section of river. By noon, we’ll have 17-21 from Stevenson to The Dalles. As this weather system moves in during the afternoon, expect the wind to pick up to 22-25 from Stevenson to Rufus for an hour or so before dropping everywhere but Stevenson and Avery.

Tomorrow gets the thumbs up for Classic Gorge Setup. Strong high pressure offshore combines with marine clouds in Portland and a heat low in the desert for unicorns and rainbows on the river. Expect 21-24 or more to start from Viento to Mosier. By late morning, we’ll have 26-30, maybe a bit more, from Viento to Rufus. Stevenson will join at some point, and Arlington will join late in the day.

Thursday looks like a carbon copy of Wednesday: 21-24 to start with 28-32 by midday. As of right now, models are all over the map for the weekend, so I’ll wait until tomorrow before hazarding guesses.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 21-24. Jones tomorrow, 22-25. Jones Thursday, 22-25. Sauvie’s today, 15-18. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 15-18. Sauvie’s Thursday, 13-16.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: 15-20/20-25/30-35, W swell 4′ @ 9 seconds. Tomorrow: 10-15/15-20/30-35+, W 3′ @ 10. Thursday: 15-20/25-30/30-40, NW 3 @ 11.

Random Morning Thoughts

Some mornings, especially the mornings when I’m tired (because my cat can be a brat sometimes), I don’t know what to write in this section. When I’m in that space, I say to myself, “What’s alive in me this morning?”

This morning I’m tired. Sleepy. But I’m also energetic and happy. I have a lot of pans on the cooktop right now, and some of those meals are getting close to being done (sorry – former line cook here). Trying to keep track of all those pans is difficult, but knowing I’m creating delicious things keeps me sane. Plus, I know that even if I burn a meal or two, I’ll get great joy and a sense of accomplishment from the meals that come out perfect.

I guess what I’m saying is this: when you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the stuff going on in your life, keep the end product in mind. Remember how you felt last time you attempted something scary or ticked something big off your to-do list? You’ll get that again when you finish up with the stuff that feels overwhelming now.

Keep that big picture in mind, watch out for spiraling thoughts of catastrophe (mine is this: I’ll fail at this thing, I won’t be able to pay my bills, and I’ll end up living on the street alone – what’s yours?), and celebrate the little accomplishments on the path to task completion. You’ve made it this far. You’ll get all this stuff checked off your list too, and you’ll feel amazing when you do! =)

Gorge Weather Forecast

Ah, summer. Clear sky. Temps in the 80’s. Wind. What more could you ask for? Expect mid 60’s this morning and low 80’s this afternoon with increasing wind during the day. A weak disturbance this afternoon will bring some high clouds. Tomorrow looks sunny with temps in the upper 50’s early and low 80’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. Thursday looks exactly like Wednesday. No rainbows for the three-day period. Fortunately, I have a rainbow on my coffee cup, so my rainbow viewing no longer depends on the weather.

Road and Mountain Biking

Nothing has changed on the trails. As a reminder, all trails on SDS and Kreps lands will remain closed until the end of summer, aka, when we get significant rainfall. All the singletrack around here (HRC, Gifford Pinchot, etc.) is currently closed to motorized use due to fire danger. If you are driving in forestland, you’ll need to carry a shovel and a gallon of water or a fire extinguisher. In road biking news, the roads are still there, still fun, and the pavement on McCurdy Farms Hill is still off-the-charts amazing.
