Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Hey everyone… 24 hours more snowfall, and then we’re into an extended sunny period. Models keep us dry from this Wednesday all the way, at least, through the following Wednesday. In that period, we’ll see temps rise into the 50’s on the slopes and the low 70’s (wow) in the lowlands. But first… snow!

Monday night into Tuesday will be quite snowy. The snow level will be 3500′ in the evening and 3000′ after midnight. About 0.7” water equivalent (WE) is forecast, for 6-7” relatively dense new snow. Wind: SSW 15-30 in the evening and WSW 25-30 after midnight. Tuesday will be snowy during the day with flurries in the evening and clear sky after midnight. The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 1000-1500′ under clear sky overnight. About 0.5” WE is forecast during the day. Add in orographic assistance for 5-7” increasingly dry snow. Another inch or two of new falls in the late afternoon or evening. Wind: WSW 30-35 int the morning, W 35 in the afternoon, and NW 25-35 overnight.

Wednesday will be sunny in the morning with a few high clouds in the afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 1000′ early and 2500′ from mid-afternoon on. No precip. Wind: NW 25-30 early, NW 5-10 in the afternoon, and variable to 5 after midnight. Thursday will be sunny. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 2500′ early, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 10,000′ after midnight. Wind: NE 10-15. Warm, sunny weather sticks around through the weekend with temps in the upper 40’s on the slopes. Enjoy!

By late morning, Rufus builds to 25-28, Arlington 22-25, and Stevenson-to-Doug’s 14-17. But wait, there’s more! Thanks to offshore high pressure, the Avery-Threemile stretch picks up to 27-31, maybe a touch more, after 1pm. River flow Monday was 85-151kcfs, river temp is 43.52F, and high temp forecast is 48F in Hood River and 53F in Arlington.

Wednesday starts with 7-10 in the west and 10-13 east of The Dalles. The wind drops to 5-10 out east in the afternoon and picks up to 14-17 from Stevenson to Swell with 10-14 at Hood River. High temp: 50F. Thursday starts light/variable and turns to E 20 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and Stevenson. High temp: 60!!! Friday brings stronger east wind – 30-35 early and 20-25 later – to Stevenson and Iwash. Easterlies continue until the high pressure shifts east, perhaps Monday or Tuesday. Keep a close eye on Tuesday for the breakdown of the pattern and a possible big corridor day. Fingers crossed!

Sisterwives and Kleeway in Post Canyon are currently closed for rebuilding. Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing (or sunny) when you go to ride; freeze-thaw trails are susceptible to permanent damage. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
