Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
“Massive” is a good word to describe how much snow Mt. Hood is receiving. As of Monday morning, 16” had fallen. Another foot fell during the day. It’s not done yet. Light snow Tuesday picks up Wednesday night, backs off Wednesday day, and turns massive Wednesday afternoon into Thursday. Models bring about 4” water equivalent (WE) to the slopes by Friday, and that’s not taking into account any orographic enhancement. Awesome.
Tuesday night into Wednesday brings about 0.3” WE additional, but NW wind will enhance that. Expect 4-6” dry powder (thanks to orographic assistance) with the snow level at 1000′ or so. Wind will be NW 30-40. Tuesday starts windy and snowy. The snow level will be 0-1000′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ after midnight. About 0.3” WE is forecast during the day. With W or NW wind, that’ll be 4-5” dry powder. Overnight, another 0.7” WE is forecast with rising snow levels. Let’s call that 6-7” denser snow. Wind: NW 35-40 early, W 25-30 during the day, WNW 20-25 in the evening, and WSW 30-50 after midnight.
Wednesday brings flurries during the day and very heavy snowfall overnight. An incoming front taps into tropical moisture in the evening for very heavy precip. There a chance we could see a shift to snain for a period late evening, but the snow level quickly falls back to the powder-snow zone. The snow level will be 3500-4000′ in the morning, 4000-4500′ in the afternoon, 5000′ (temps at +1C) briefly in the evening, and 2000′ after midnight. About 0.1” WE is forecast during the day for an inch of new. Overnight, 1.4” WE is forecast for 10-13” snow that starts wet and turns dry. Wind will be WSW 30-50 in the morning, SW 40-60 in the afternoon, and W 40 after midnight. Despite sounding dire, those SW or WSW winds shouldn’t have a huge impact on lift ops. W or NW is far more troublesome.
Heavy snow continues on Thursday – up to a foot of additional snow is forecast with the snow level around 1500′. The snow should taper off Thursday night and leave us with a partly dry Friday. The weather remains rather cool through the weekend; the snow quality will remain excellent. What a week it will be. Enjoy!

Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Generally speaking, we’re in a pattern that will give us westerlies. Tuesday won’t be all that strong – 10-13mph east of The Dalles all day with less than 10mph to the west. River flow Monday was 103-135kcfs, river temp is 42.44F, and high temp forecast is 43F. Wednesday starts with 13-16 west of Viento, or maybe to Viento. East of there to Arlington: light westerlies or calm wind to start the day. Afternoon wind picks up to gusty 24-28 from Avery to Arlington. Given the SW flow aloft, the wind will be less gusty at Arlington and Threemile than at Rufus. High temp: 50F. Thursday has some inconsistency in the models. It’ll definitely be raining in most of the Gorge. The best chance for wind will be east of Rufus, but models are rather rangy as of right now. So, let’s wait. Widespread easterlies are likely on Friday as low pressure sets up offshore, but we’ll be back to westerlies before long. Stay warm out there on the river. Ride with friends and keep an eye on them!

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
