Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when you’re under a stay-at-home order? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider contributing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to support me and get the email version? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $19.99 or more gets you a year. Click below to contribute. Thank you!!

Statement on Racial Justice
I pledge to speak out against racism, and I pledge to be a humble ally who is willing to look at the ways that I benefit personally from racist structures in this society. I will continue to speak up and help wake up others, and I will listen quietly when people of color need me to.
I ask that all of you also reflect on the ways you benefit from racist societal structures. I recommend reading “White Fragility” and “How to be an Anti-Racist”. Don’t have much time? Read “Unpacking the Knapsack of White Privilege”. Watch the movie “13th”. When others confront you about your racism, take a deep breath, listen quietly, and attempt to quell your natural defensiveness. We have been raised in a society founded on slavery and racism. These values (and yes, some people hold them as values) remain entrenched in our society in subtle and not-so subtle ways. I challenge you to learn to see them so that you can learn to undo them. We can’t undo the damage that’s been done, and we don’t have the right to ask for forgiveness, but we can work to create a more equitable world going forward.

Gorge Wind Forecast
There’s almost exactly zero wind to start Tuesday, but that doesn’t mean there will be zero wind for the rest of the day. As a matter of fact, westerlies return this afternoon and stick around for the extended forecast!
Expect near-zero wind for your near-zero wind activities (road biking, sculling, fly fishing) until late morning. As a cold front approaches from offshore this afternoon, westerlies step it up. We’ll have 16-19 from Stevenson to Mosier by 2pm and 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles after 5pm. The exception to that will likely be Swell, which doesn’t like approaching cold fronts; the Hatchery stretch of river might see an hour or so of that 21-24 before dropping to gusty 16-19. River flow is 293kcfs and temp is 61 degrees.
A weak cold front swings through on Wednesday. Marine clouds fill the western half of the state, and high clouds drift over the region. These clouds continue to push inland, finally reaching Hood River in the afternoon. Before that happens… we’ll see early morning westerlies at 21-24 from Viento to Mosier with a shot at 23-26 at Mosier. Lyle to Biggs start the day at 10-13, and the eastern reaches of the Gorge get nothing. We’ll see the wind climb to 26-29 from Mosier to Arlington as this front moves through. Areas west of there drop to gusty 19-23.
High pressure and sunshine returns in the wake of Wednesday’s weather system. Morning westerlies start at 14-17 from Stevenson to Swell with light wind from Hood River eastward. Afternoon: 17-20 at Swell (upper flow too northerly!) and 20-24 at Stevenson, Viento, and from Mosier to The Dalles.
Offshore high pressure asserts itself and flexes its muscles Friday through Sunday. If nothing changes, we’re looking at three days of strong westerlies. Models are showing remarkable agreement that Saturday will be the strongest of the three. Any of them will get you on the water for anything that’s not a light wind sport!
