Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It sure is a nice day for fishing out there, and so it shall remain near Hood River. In other words, it doesn’t look all that windy today (Tuesday). Thermals and a passing shortwave give us much stronger wind on Wednesday, but atmospheric instability will affect quality. We’re back to light wind on Thursday and stronger wind Friday. That’ll be my last forecast for a week as I’m headed out on my last meditation retreat of the season.

Let’s look at Tuesday. We’ll have easterlies at 15-20ish this morning from Rooster to Viento. They’ll die off to less than 10mph after 1pm or so. From Hood River eastward, the wind will be less than 5mph all day long. River flow readings this morning are 76-161 kcfs (they were about 180kcfs yesterday afternoon – expect a repeat today). River temp is 71F, and high temp forecast is a blazing 98F.

Wednesday’s setup includes meager offshore pressure and a passing shortwave in the morning. There will also be instability to the north all day. Portland’s high temp falls to the low 90’s while Pasco remains above 100F. What’s all that mean? Well… the day starts with 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River and builds to 17-21 from Stevenson to Mosier (11-14 to the east) by 11am. Models then indicate that the wind will shift eastward and continue to shift east as the day passes. Between late morning and early to mid afternoon, westerlies pick up to gusty 21-24 from Hood River to Rufus with gusty 16-19 from Stevenson to Swell and 10-13 at Arlington. The wind could drop even more between Portland and Mosier as temps equalize. Thank the desert heat for what comes next: gusty 24-28 from Lyle to Arlington with 19-23 (maybe) at Threemile. High temp: 93F for Hood River.

Temps nearly equalize across the west side on Thursday, and this leaves us with not-much wind. The current forecast starts the day with 10-13 from Stevenson to Swell and ends it with light westerlies. Models currently suggest 27-31 on Friday, especially late (when I’ll be gone, damnit!), as Portland stays below 90 and the desert soars above 100F. After Friday, there’s a LOT of range in the forecast predictions, so we’ll hold off on a longer-term forecast. Stay cool today!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. Cycling

As of Monday, 8/17, the following trails are closed due to fire danger: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and andy lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
