Gorge Wind Forecast
The wind forecast for the latter half of this week remains tricky with several weather systems impacting the area. For Tuesday, the far northwestern reaches of Oregon will be clipped by a weak front. That will help keep a temperature (and thus pressure) gradient going. We’ll have westerlies at 5-10 through the whole Gorge this morning. In the afternoon, you can expect gusty 18-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles, with the strongest wind likely to be found at Stevenson, Viento, and Hood River. River flow today is 313kcfs (strong, but good near Rufus) and river temp is 58 degrees.
High pressure builds inland on Wednesday. Calm wind lasts through 11am. As the desert heats, we’ll see the wind eventually pick up to 18-22 late in the day from Stevenson to Mosier. If less wind is find, you’ll find it first at Stevenson starting around 1pm, slowly moving westward and building in strength as the day goes on.
On Thursday, stronger, but very gusty and hard-to-predict westerlies return ahead of an approaching frontal system set to arrive Friday. Given the last few similar days, I’m going to knock some speed off the models and add some range. The day starts with Dawn Patrol at 20-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles. In the afternoon, the wind builds to gusty 23-29 from Stevenson to Arlington. Strongest locations will probably be Hood River, Doug’s, Avery, and Rufus.
A cold front moves inland on Friday. As of right now, the wind looks like it’ll be in the teens. Predicting the weekend is particularly difficult right now due to near-certain rain in the forecast. If it’s windy (and models do say we’ll see mid 20’s or more), you’ll have to head east of The Dalles to get out of the rain and clouds and into the wind.
BONUS: Jones Tuesday: 10-13. Wednesday: 18-22. Thursday: 5-10. Sauvie’s Tuesday: X. Wednesday: 12-15 late. Thursday: X. Coast: not really anything for the next three days. W swell 4′ at 8 seconds Tuesday, 7′ @ 11 Wednesday, 6′ @ 11 Thursday.
