Tuesday. Hello fall.

As we move into fall and the weather becomes more dynamic, the wind forecasting becomes less accurate. It’s just the nature of the beast, sadly. Anyway, expect light wind for much of the day, all morning at least, as gradients start off at just .02 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc). As a weak front approaches the…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow’s weather will look more like winter than fall, as a sub-1000mb upper level low swings over the state in the afternoon and evening hours. This sets us up for light east wind early and strong/gusty west wind overnight as the low crosses the Cascades. It’s unlikely the westerlies will arrive before dark, but if they do, the best chance to catch them will be from Lyle eastward. Mostly it’ll just be calm and rainy tomorrow.

As that low pressure system exits to the east on Thursday, we’ll have leftover westerlies. The western Gorge will most likely be under the clouds and showery with up-and-down teen-strength west wind. East of the low clouds, you’ll find gusty 20-23 in the morning and 23-27 in the afternoon, filling in all the way to Arlington.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s cool and cloudy outside this morning. The last remnants of summer are slipping away. On Facebook last night, I saw a post from my friend Om who lives, lived, in Middleton, California. His house burned to ashes yesterday, along with everything he owned except his cat and two suitcases of random stuff he was able to grab. My friend lost her new sunglasses in Post, and someone found them and kept them. Lila May, our little Hood River Princess, left us this weekend.

I sit here contemplating this while drinking coffee from a unicorn and rainbow cup that was given to me with a story: the cup, like everything else, is already broken. Within it is the potential for it to shatter into a thousand pieces someday. Within everything – houses, possessions, people – is the potential for non-existence. Our entire reality is Schroedinger’s Cat, existing and not-existing in the same moment.

By nature, we become attached to things and assume they will always be there. If we can recognize the falsehood of that belief, we can create vibrant memories, rather than a belief in permanence. Why do this? Believing in permanence will lead to shock, surprise, and added pain when things are gone. Sure, we’ll grieve when we lose things. That’s only natural. But we can temper our future grief by forming beautiful memories in the present moment to comfort us in our pain in the future.

Enjoy what you have right now, in the now. Send some compassion to my friend who lost her shades, my friend who lost his house, and to Lila May’s mom. It’s a beautiful day today. Make it an awesome one.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I spent the first 20 minutes of my morning watching an amazing and dynamic sunrise filled with all sorts of different light and colors. I looked away while I was adding heavy cream to my French press coffee, and when I turned back around, the sky was just shades of while and gray. The moral of this story is that all black, white and gray things contain the possibility for amazing amounts of color at a different point in time. And now… back to the weather. Expect high clouds this morning and lowering clouds throughout the day with a chance of sprinkles late. Temps in the low 50’s early and the mid 60’s later. Light wind. No rainbows.

Tomorrow starts off cloudy and doesn’t change one dang bit until 2pm or so, when the heavens will open up with rain that continues for the rest of the day. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 11% chance of rainbows.

Thursday looks partly to mostly cloudy and showery all day. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind, 98% chance of rainbows. We’ll start drying out after Thursday and will likely see a sunny/dry weekend.

Road and Mountain Biking

It looks like an awesome day for a road ride. Get out there under the clouds and enjoy the cool temps and light wind. The dirt is still dusty, but that should change after the next two days. Tack alert for Friday, maybe! In other news, Columbia Hills (aka Crawford Oaks trailhead) is closed until at least 9/17 due to the wildfire that swept through there.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include pickup touch rugby at 6 at the Hood River Marina, Triathlon practice at 6 at Mayer Park, community mindfulness meditation at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30 (my favorite, of course) and Community yoga at the Mosier Senior Center at 7.

Tomorrow’s events include the women’s post n’ pinot bike ride at 5:30 at Dirty Fingers, Ping pong at the same time at the Armory, and sailboat racing at the Hood River Marina.

Coming up Friday evening, Columbia Center for the Arts has a free film festival celebrating the Columbia River. There are three work parties on Saturday, one on the Sandy River, one at Rooster Rock, and another on the 170 trail in Post Canyon. If you do the Rooster Rock cleanup on Saturday, stick around the beach for a stargazing party in the evening.

Have an awesome day today!
