Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s a super windy and stormy start to Tuesday. If that’s your thing, and if the lifts can run (many were on standby at 7:45am), you’ll find lovely fresh tracks. If not today, the next 10 days looks relatively cool with plenty of snowfall on the mountain. As a matter of fact, 10 day accumulated snowfall is north of four feet. So… yeah… lots of good riding coming up!

For Tuesday, it’s full-on storm skiing. The snow level will be 4000′ all day, falling to 2000′ after the weather system passes and the sky briefly (maybe) clears tonight. About 0.5”-0.8” water value (WV) falls during the day, for 5-8” of new snow. Another 0.1” WV falls tonight. Snowfall totals could be double those due to orographic effects. Wind: NW 30-35 for the 24 hour period.

Models disagree on the weather Wednesday morning, so I’m going to lean towards orographic snowfall rather than clear sky. The snow level will be 2000′ early and 3500-4000′ in the afternoon. Daytime precip: 0.2” WV that falls as 2”+ new snow. Overnight: 1” WV for 10-11” of new. Yup. Multiply by 1.3 or more for wind effects if we are lucky! Wind: NW 30 in the morning, W 30-35 in the afternoon, and WNW 25 overnight. That direction is a little better for lift operations that Tuesday’s NW.

Thursday: FRESHIE DAY! Heavy snowfall all day and all night. Snow level 3500′-4000′. Daytime precip: 0.7” WV, for 7-8” new. Overnight: 0.7” WV, for another 7-8”. Wind: storm skiing for sure. WNW 25 early, W 30 in the afternoon, and NW 10 overnight.

Friday looks cloudy but calmer. Snow level: 3500′ early, 4500′ in the afternoon, 4000′ overnight. Just a trace of snow will fall. Wind: NW 10 early, NW 5 in the afternoon, SW 10 overnight. Another round of snow starts up midday Saturday. Aside: Saturday morning should be pretty good for Nordic skiing too. Orographic (terrain-driven) snow continues on Sunday. Late season fresh tracks for everyone!

Gorge Wind

Today, Tuesday, is the day you’ve been waiting for! One note: feeder river levels are quite high, meaning there will be lots of debris in the river downstream of those feeder rivers. Do be on the lookout. Another option is to head to a spot farther east (less rain over the last few days) or just below a dam (maybe less stuff in the river?). River flow is 219kcfs. River temp is 47 degrees. Kite or sail with a partner, and keep them in sight.

I slept in late this morning, but that seems to be okay, as the high pressure hasn’t finished building offshore and the rain is still falling in Hood River. We’ll see that high pressure build through the morning. Result: increasing synoptic scale gradients and (no proof of this, but probably) lee-side troughing from strong upper level NW flow. The wind picks up to 30-35 from Mosier to Boardman after 11am. Western Gorge: trickier. Stevenson will be rainy through midday. With this many clouds in Hood River, it’s likely the wind will stay gusty all day. So… let’s call the afternoon wind extra-gusty 25-35 from Stevenson to Bingen. The wind will last until sunset.

If you’re going out today, consider doing so in memory of Laura Green, the most badassest windsurfer to ever sail the Columbia. You may also know her as Christa, the iWindsurf forecaster. She was the first person I thought of when I saw this day coming – she would have been all over it!

Wednesday: upper flow turns more westerly and offshore high pressure shifts to southern Oregon and and California coast. This opens the door for another weather system to swing through. Synoptic scale gradients will still be favorable. We’ll have 25-29 all day from Stevenson to Arlington. Rain will be falling in the west, so you’ll probably have to drive east of Hood River for sunshine and steadier wind.

Thursday sees an upper level low and front approach from the NW. Westerlies start at 10-13 through the entire Gorge and pick up to gusty 14-17 everywhere in the afternoon. Similar story on Friday with westerlies at 15-18.

Road and Mountain Biking

ATTENTION #1: HRATS work party on Whoopdee at 9:30am on Saturday. ATTENTION #2: the cows are out on Hospital Hill, and people have still been taking dogs on their hikes and bikes. STOP! I received an email from the Kreps asking me to remind folks that dogs are not allowed on Hospital Hill between March 20th and July 1st. Cows or no cows, dogs are not allowed. We use that land due to the generosity of the Kreps family. When you go against their wishes, 1) you’re being a selfish butthead and 2) you endanger access for others. Please, leave your dogs at home! Other news: snow-free trails include Post from Mitchell Ridge down, Whoopdee (too muddy), and Syncline. All trails will be too wet to ride starting today – if you ride muddy trails, you’ll damage them. Let them dry out, and trail volunteers can build new trails rather than fixing damage you caused. Thank you!

Upcoming Events

It’s Tuesday. There’s Zen meditation at Trinity Body Arts at 6am and free yoga at HAVEN in The Dalles at 5:30pm. At 5:15pm, there’s an hour-long silent meditation for experienced meditators. That’s followed by a 30-40 minute meditation and talk by the Pacific Hermitage monks starting at 6:30. The NW trail sisters have a female-identified bike ride at Sandy Ridge (weather permitting?) on Saturday. The first HRATS trail work party happens Saturday at 9:30am at the Whoopdee trail.
