Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s a sunny day on Mt. Hood, and the gentle weather will last through Wednesday. Snow starts up Thursday, continuing through Friday. There’s still some model disagreement on 5000′ temps for Thursday into Friday, and that translates into difficulty predicting the snow level and p-type. The weekend currently looks sunny on Saturday with clouds and a brief chance of light sprinkles on Sunday.

For Tuesday, it will be clear and sunny on the hill. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 0′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ overnight. Wind will be W 10 early, SW 10 in the afternoon, and WSW 20 overnight.

Wednesday starts off sunny. High clouds move in during the afternoon. A brief, dry system swings through overnight, leaving low clouds after midnight. The FAF will be 7000′ all day and 4000′ after midnight. Wind will be WSW 20 in the morning, SW 10 in the afternoon, and SW 20 after midnight.

Thursday starts with low clouds. Precip starts up around 7am continuing with some orographic enhancement (not much due to SW flow) overnight. Timberline may do better than Meadows with this system. The tricky part is that the GFS keeps the snow level at 4000-5000′ for most of this period, with a short bump to 5500′. The ECMWF is less optimistic, with 5500′-6000′. What we do know: .1” WV or so falls during the day, for up to an inch of snow. About .5” WV falls overnight. Given the temps, best guess is 2-4” of wet snow. Wind will be strong: SW 15 early, SW 35 by 10am, SW 40+ in the afternoon, and WSW 40 after midnight.

The snow level drops on Friday morning for a snowy morning and a partly cloudy afternoon and evening. The snow level will be 3000′ early and will then fall to 1500′ after midnight. About .4” WV falls during the day, for 3-5” of average snow. Wind will be WSW 40 early, fading to W 25 in the afternoon and becoming SW 5-10 after midnight. Saturday looks sunny. Sunday looks partly cloudy with a brief chance of sprinkles mid-morning. That could change, of course, depending on the path of an incoming low pressure system.

Random Morning Thoughts

II wasn’t going to write a forecast at all today, because I have the entire morning off. But then I sat down at the computer to check out the weather models (because that’s what I do), and now there is a forecast. I’ll skip tomorrow – it’s a very long day for me, and I could use a couple extra hours of sleep. That’s all I have to say today. May you be healthy and strong. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

East wind at 20-25 this morning backs off to E 15-20 this afternoon. That’s near Rooster. Less near Stevenson. Wednesday starts with E 40 and backs off to E 20-25 after noon. Thursday starts with E 15-20. After noon, the wind turns to very gusty 26-30 through the entire Gorge, lasting until 4 or 5pm. Friday looks like a short period of W 15-18 in the afternoon, probably east of Mosier.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a beautiful sunny start to the day with some Nothing here and there. Sunshine should burn any lingering Nothing away, leaving us with a clear day. Temps will be in the mid 20’s early and mid 50’s this afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Wednesday starts sunny and finishes up cloudy. Temps will be in the low to mid 30’s early and low 50’s in the afternoon. East wind. 5% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks rainy. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and low 50’s in the afternoon. East wind early. Strong westerlies in the afternoon. 99% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Given the sub-freezing temps last night, avoiding trails exposed to open air would be a good idea today. Otherwise you risk damaging trails and coating your bike in mud. Try riding Post (under the canopy and only before 10am) or Nestor for better results, aka frozen dirt. Coming up Saturday night at 7pm, the HRATS are holding a fundraiser at the Elks Club. Come see a freeride mountain bike movie and help the HRATS raise money to build a super-sweet pump track. In other news, the movie Ciclovida plays at Rockford Grange on the 16th. That one’s about Brazilians (I think!) cycling around the country saving seeds. This will appeal to gardeners and cyclists. 5:30pm. Soup first.

Upcoming Events

Coming up Tuesday, there’s by-donation moving meditation at Trinity at 6:15. There’s a free meditation/breathing class at Flow at 8am. There a free yoga class at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon. There are two evening by-donation events: a women’s only (anyone identifying as “female”) mobility, strength and self-defense class at First Light in Hood River at 6pm, and meditation with the Pacific Hermitage monks at 6:30 at Yoga Samadhi. This Saturday is the fundraiser for the HRATS pump track. Elks Club. The following Friday is the movie Ciclovida at the Rockford Grange.

Have an awesome day today!
