Tuesday Gorge wind forecast: just enough for the next couple of days. Then a hot break for a hot minute.

today’s gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! August is in full swing, and it’s about to behave like times of yore: a heat wave is going to shut the wind off for a bit and also turn it easterly for a bit. Looking into the longer-range future, โ€œThe Cooldown You Were Looking Forโ€ is falling apart. Ensembles are hinting at a longer period of heat than previously forecast, and this results in a longer wait for the next big day. So, get all the wind you can in the next couple of days!

Tuesday started off sunny from the metro area all the way into the Gorge. Pressures at 6am (I woke up at 4:30!) were 30.12/30.08/20.05 for gradients of 0.04/0.03. Wind was generally under 15mph at dawn; strongest wind was between Maryhill and Arlington with 14-17mph. We’ll have a slow start to the day. Westerlies fall below 10mph east of The Dalles and rise to 13-16mph from Stevenson to Swell or Hood River late morning. Afternoon brings 15-18mph from Stevenson to Hood River (maybe 17-20mph if we’re lucky!) with 17-20mph from Mosier to Avery. A few mph more is possible after 5pm. East of Avery: light until the executive session when the wind picks up to 14-17mph between Avery and Arlington. High temps range from 82F in Hood River to 87F at Rufus.

tomorrow’s gorge wind forecast

A few morning clouds are forecast for the metro area and western Gorge on Wednesday. This will help our cause! We start with 18-21mph from Viento to Mosier and 14-17mph near Rowena. The wind holds all morning. In the afternoon, it rises to 20-23mph between Mosier and Avery with 17-20mph at Rufus. The Stevenson-Hood River zone is a bit of a wild card โ€“ if the clouds over-perform, so will the wind. If not, the wind lingers at 16-19mph into the evening. High temp: 82F for Hood River.

EURO ENSEMBLE GORGE WIND FORECAST FOR THE NEXT WEEK

High pressure settles in across the PNW on Thursday. Say goodbye to the gradients, and say hello to a nearly windless day. Calm wind starts us off. Easterlies pick up to 10-13mph between Viento and Stevenson midday before shutting off in the afternoon. We’re left becalmed and hot: 89F for Hood River under sunny sky. Stronger easterlies are in the cards on Friday thanks to a heat low in the Willamette Valley: 20-25mph or so at Iwash (Rooster) Rock, Stevenson, Home Valley, and Viento. High temp: 93F for Hood River.

As of this morning’s model runs, we’ve got this in the extended: light/variable wind on Saturday; questionable conditions on Sunday. Previous model runs brought a cooldown to the PNW on Sunday, but that’s (probably) no longer the case. As a matter of fact, there’s some indication the heat could linger well into next week. Models do suggest the hottest weather will shift east of the Cascades Sunday or Monday, which would bring back west wind. Fingers crossed for that. If we can’t have โ€œThe Cooldown You Were Looking Forโ€, let’s vote for 17-20mph or more. Some wind is better than no wind, especially if it’s going to be hot! See you on the Nch’i Wana!

THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman

Good morning, neighbors! A couple more pleasant days are planned, and then we tip into another heat wave. That might qualify as pleasant for some of you, but for many it’ll just be hot. Models previously indicated an end to the heat by Sunday, but there are now indications it may persist much longer. More talk on that later. First…

Glenwood this morning

Let’s check in on Glenwood. It’s sooooooo chilly there this morning โ€“ 41 degrees. Actually, that was 30 minutes ago. Now it’s 39 degrees! If it were winter and 39 degrees, you’d be wearing a hat, gloves, and puffy coat. That’s the dress code this morning in Glenwood! All the outdoor retailers and fashion houses have heard about Glenwood, and it’s become the go-to place for summer fashion shows that showcase winter clothing. Nothing beats a 6am walk down the catwalk wearing the latest Patagonia puffy!

today’s gorge weather forecast

The rest of us started today in the upper 40s (Parkdale) to the upper 60s (Rowena) with light west wind. This afternoon (you won’t believe this!) will be warmer than this morning: 82F in the west, 87F near The Dalles, and 90F out in the desert where your friendly local immigrants are harvesting watermelons. CHINGA LA MIGRA! While the wind will be light this morning, it picks up to 15-20mph from Stevenson to Murdoch this afternoon. Between The Dalles and Rufus, the wind rises to 15mph. East of there: light wind.

wednesday’s gorge weather forecast

Clear sky tonight combines with 850mb temps at 15F for a good night for sleeping. West of Hood River, a few low clouds start Wednesday. Being low, they won’t be able to face the world long. By mid-day, they’ll go back to bed and leave us all with blue, sunny sky. West wind lingers: 15-20mph all day from Stevenson to Hood River with 15-20mph as far east as Rufus in the afternoon. High temps will be exactly the same as Tuesday. Or close enough for government work, which seems to require less precision and more excision these days, which isn’t a good thing based on the lack of overnight workers at NWS Pendleton (and other things).

extended gorge weather forecast

Setting aside excision, you’ll want to plan for early-morning exercising on Thursday: it’s going to be sunny, hot, and not windy. After a 55ish degree start, which you’ll want to soak up and lock up in your house, temps rise to 89 (west), 94 (central), and 91 (desert). Friday looks about 5 degrees hotter. In a fun change, we’ll have east wind instead of west wind: 10-20mph depending on your location. Saturday and Sunday look HOT (95-102 degrees) and not windy (Saturday) and probably not windy (Sunday). Beyond that, there’s quite a bit of range in the models. In a disheartening turn from the model runs over the last 48 hours, the latest run (specifically the cluster models and temps for The Dalles) suggests the heat wave may last quite a bit longer than initially predicted. Humph. Better get familiar with your local swimming holes! You wouldn’t want to spend too many days in a row at the same one. Safe travels. -TATAS
