Tuesday. Good dirt. Good sun. Another good day in paradise.

DSC_8158-Edit
Tuesday is starting off with a light westerly breeze, and nothing will change about that as the day goes on. The 7am gradients were .05 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc). Models indicate that the gradients and the wind will drop as the day goes on, but I dunno… this setup we’re seeing is usually pretty stable over the course of a day. So, let’s call it 10-13 at Swell this morning with 5-10 through the rest of the Stevenson to Mosier stretch. The wind will likely pick up late this afternoon to 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier. River temp is 58 degrees, flow is 306kcfs at The Dalles, and 1855 Chinook and one Orca Whale made it past Bonneville yesterday. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Just kidding about the Orca. I wanted to see if you were paying attention.

Wednesday sees high pressure off the Oregon coast with an upper level low dropping into the Vancouver Island region in the afternoon. That’ll give us Dawn Patrol at 21-24 (maybe I can go windsurfing before school!) from Viento to Swell. The wind will pick up to 26-30 from Viento to Hood River mid-morning, and then fill in to somewhat gusty 28-32 from Stevenson to Arlington in the afternoon. It’s likely that the wind will drop off in the Viento to Mosier stretch in the afternoon as the low pressure system impacts atmospheric stability a bit.

That upper level low hangs out over BC on Thursday, sending deep marine clouds into Portland, high clouds over the region, and a chance of rain to the entire Northwest. This isn’t an ideal setup for wind, but it’s not as tricky as last weekend’s setup. I think we’ll see gusty 11-14 in the western Gorge with gusty 23-26 from The Dalles eastward for much of the day. Friday looks light and variable early with W 10-13 in the afternoon.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’m going to keep telling you this, because I know you want to make trails better: Our local trails organization has agreed to provide the volunteers for the Cascadia Cup next weekend, and in exchange, the race organizers are offering up $8000 for our trails. So, we need volunteers! Sign up here, now. Looking to ride? Get the complete list of open trails here.

In other news, Post Canyon was ridiculously perfect yesterday and will likely remain so today. In road biking news, today looks pretty good, with sunshine and light wind. Friday also looks decent, with light wind, cooler temps, and partly cloudy sky. There’s a race in Post Canyon Saturday and Sunday and there’s a race on Dog River on Sunday.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include all of the following free or by-donation events: yoga at 4:30 at Flow, pickleball at 5:15 at May Street Elementary, pickup touch rugby at the Waterfront Park in Hood River at 5:30, meditation at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30, and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30. Tonight’s meditation at Yoga Samadhi features a special guest, Bhate Rhahula. This man has been a monk as long as I’ve been alive, and we’re very lucky to have him here. Go to meditation tonight if you can!

Looking ahead to the weekend, the Cascadia Dirt Cup Enduro race takes over parts of Post Canyon both Saturday and Sunday. Along with that race, there are free Devinci mountain bike demos thrusday through Sunday and a Superhero costume party at Dirty Fingers on Saturday night. The Dog River Super D takes over the Dog River trail off highway 35 on Sunday, with racers likely to be doing practice laps on Saturday. Cooper Spur was planning a cross country mountain bike race this weekend, but at some point they canceled it. Good thing, because that would be a lot of local bike races in one weekend!

Have an awesome day today!
