Tuesday. Filtered sun. Fun!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast It seems to be a high overcast morning on Mt. Hood, which isn’t quite sunny but isn’t quite cloudy. Gosh, life can be so confusing sometimes, can’t it? Anyway, the clouds will thicken as the day goes on, and some sort of precip will start up around 8pm. Given the time…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It seems to be a high overcast morning on Mt. Hood, which isn’t quite sunny but isn’t quite cloudy. Gosh, life can be so confusing sometimes, can’t it? Anyway, the clouds will thicken as the day goes on, and some sort of precip will start up around 8pm. Given the time of year and the nature of this system, I’m thinking it’ll be very wet, warm snow overnight, with very little accumulation. But maybe it’ll rain. We’ll have to wait and see! The snow level will be 1000′ this morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 5500′-6000′ tonight. We’ll see about .5” water value (WV) overnight, for a couple inches of wet new snow at ski area base elevations, at best. Maybe just rain. Wind will be S 10 early, rising throughout the day to SW 35+ after midnight.

Wednesday will probably start off with wet snow or mixed precip, but that should transition to snow later on, with the possibility of more wet snow in the afternoon as the snow level jumps around. Adding to the uncertainty on Wednesday is the fact that the precip quantity will depend on exactly where the band of heaviest precip sets up. So there. We have very little information, so the following forecast is a guess. The snow level will be 5500′ early, 3500′ during the day, 5500′ in the evening, and 2000′ by Thursday morning. We’ll see .2” or so WV during the day, for a couple inches of snow. Then a round of heavy precip hits when the snow level is at 5500′, so that gives us a possible mix of rain and snow or accumulating wet snow followed by dry snow. Call it a few inches of new. Wind will be SW 30 early, dropping to S 10 in the afternoon and rising to SW 20 in the evening.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued

Thursday will probably start out partly cloudy, but snow will increase in the afternoon as the atmosphere destabilizes a bit. The snow level will be 2000′ early, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ after midnight. We’ll see about .2” WV between 5am and 5pm, mostly after noon, for a couple inches of new snow. Another inch or so falls overnight. Wind will be SW 20 all day, becoming WSW 25 after midnight.

Friday’s forecast currently shows light snowfall with the snow level at 2500′ and W wind at 25mph. As of right now, Saturday looks sunny.

Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s a nice easterly breeze this morning. It will last half the day and go away. Expect 30-35 this morning at Rooster and 20-25 at Steven’s Locks. After 2pm, the wind will drop to E 10-15 at those beaches and fill in at 8-12 through the entire rest of the Gorge as a low pressure system approaches the coast. The wind will jump to E 40 overnight. Wednesday starts off with a pre-dawn burst of strong east wind, but by daybreak, we should have light and variable wind. The wind will stay LTV under rainy sky all day long.

Thursday looks light and variable to start in the western Gorge with 10-13 to start east of The Dalles. After 11am or so, you can expect W 7-10 from Stevenson to The Dalles with W 22-25 east of The Dalles. River temp is currently 46 degrees and river flow is 386kcfs at The Dalles, still a bit high for the Maryhill section of river.

Random Morning Thoughts

Looks like a beautiful day out there today. I think I’ll just stop staring at the computer now and get to work so I can enjoy the sun. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Looks like the high clouds ahead of an upper level low made it a bit earlier than expected. That’ll make it a little cooler than expected today. SAD. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the mid 50’s this afternoon. Rain moves in after 8pm. East wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks rainy and showery and cloudy. The rain will be heavy at times. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 50’s this afternoon. East wind early, light and variable wind the rest of the day. 3% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks dry through about 11am followed by showers and rain the rest of the day. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 50’s this afternoon. Light west wind. 71% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I went for a jog in Post Canyon yesterday, and I would say that anything that’s out in the open, not under the canopy, is getting hit with some freeze-thaw and maybe should be avoided today. At least, the clearcut leading to lower 8-Track was a mess, so keep that in mind. Syncline, drier, should be fine. Cows are out on Hospital Hill, so NO DOGS. No, really! Whoopdee is open. Sandy Ridge is open. Columbia Hills is open. Any reports from Nestor? In road biking news, expect widespread east wind this afternoon under filtered sun. Have fun out there!

Upcoming Events

It’s Tuesday. There’s pickup touch rugby at 5 at the Hood River Marina Park. There’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu tonight from 5pm to 9pm. At 6:30 this evening, there’s meditation at Yoga Samadhi led the monks from Pacific Hermitage. This remains, and most likely always will, my favorite activity of the week. Looking ahead to Wednesday, Greg Walden has a town hall in The Dalles at 11am and one in Hood River at 3pm. I’m sure those will be … interesting.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
