Gorge Wind Forecast
Models seem to be slowly coming into agreement about the weather for the next five days or so. It appears we’ll have wind most of those days, but the strength and timing could be a little tricky; the pattern’s looking a bit fall-like, with a series of weather disturbances moving through the area.
For Tuesday, we have a pretty good setup for wind, despite the light start. Offshore high pressure combines with desert low pressure this afternoon for more wind than you’d expect given the early morning LTV and gradients of .05 and .00. By noon, we’ll have 20-23 from Stevenson to Moiser with light wind east of there. The wind jumps to gusty 25-28 this afternoon from Stevenson to Avery, possibly Rufus, with 13-16 near Roosevelt. River flow is 84,000cfs and temp is 70 degrees.
Tomorrow sees weak high pressure build inland. The GFS thinks the wind will die off to nothing, but westerlies are a more likely scenario. Let’s call it 8-11 from Viento to Hood river through mid-morning. The wind will slowly build to 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River in the afternoon.
On to Thursday, which looks mighty interesting weather-wise. A low storms across the southern portion of the state during the day, increasing the gradient and the instability. Consistent wind is out of the picture due to atmospheric dynamics. So are westerlies, at this point. Early wind will be 15-20 near Rooster and Stevenson. There may be a bump to gusty 20-23 midday as this low approaches. The wind then goes calm-ish in the afternoon.
Looking longer-range, a series of weather systems enter the picture. This sets us up for strong westerlies Friday through Sunday. Extensive clouds will likely push the wind to the Near East and Far East portions of the Gorge.

Road and Mountain Biking
Approximately 0.2” of rain fell last Thursday, meaning some of our trails have been refreshed. Next chance of rain: Thursday again. Chipseal is good to go between Mosier and Rowena crest. Riorden Hill Road will remain closed from the end of the pavement to Family Man weekdays through the beginning of September. That means associated trails are also closed weekdays for that time period (Family Man, Middle School, Float On). As for Kreps/SDS lands… they haven’t issued a closure yet!
All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
