Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Intermittent snow flurries stick around on Tuesday thanks to orographic (terrain-enhanced) assistance. Wednesday daytime looks dry, but a bit of snow arrives in the evening. Models are all over the place on snow quantity, but it should be enough to keep the groom as packed powder quality. We’re back to sunshine on Saturday and warmer temps for Sunday and Monday.
Northwest wind keeps the snow flurries coming through the daylight hours on Tuesday. Models disagree on the snow total for the next 24 hours, but it could be up to 2”. The snow level will be 1000-1500′ until midnight. After that, colder upper-level air moves in and takes the snow level to 0-500′ near Mt. Hood. Wind will be NW 25-30 in the morning, NW 30-35 in the afternoon, and will go variable to 10mph overnight. Higher elevations will see strong NNW wind after midnight, and that could give us some downsloping wind conditions early on Wednesday.
Wednesday starts with high clouds and becomes cloudier as the day goes on. Snow starts falling around 4pm. The effective snow level based on 850mb temps will be 0′ in the morning and 2500′ in the afternoon. It’s unclear how much snow will fall – somewhere between 0.2” water equivalent (WE) and 0.8” WE. Of course we are all voting for the higher end of that! Call it 2-8” of snow for now and plan on 4”. Wind will be variable to 10mph plus a shot at downsloping northerlies early and NW 20-25mph from mid-morning on through the night.
Thursday starts with light snowfall and eventually turns clear. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning and will slowly rise to a free air freezing level of 6500′ under clear sky overnight. A trace of snow is possible in the morning before the sky clears. Wind: NW 20-25 in the morning, variable to 5 in the afternoon, and SW 10-15 after midnight. Saturday looks clear and cold with intermittent orographic flurries and the freezing level around 1500′. Temps warm on Sunday under sunny sky.
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling
FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!
