Mt. Hood Forecast
Our active winter weather pattern continues, but we’ll also have a dry period on Tuesday and another one on Thursday. If you’re looking for storm skiing, Friday is currently your best bet. For Tuesday, expect the flurries to clear up and the sun to come out. High clouds move in during the afternoon, and light snow arrives late in the evening. The snow level fluctuates from 2000′ early to 4500′ in the afternoon to 3500′ overnight. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast, for 2” of standard-issue Mt. Hood snow. Wind: WSW 15-20 early, SW 20-40 in the afternoon, and WSW 20-30 overnight.
Wednesday looks snowy. The snow level starts at 3500′, holds all day, and drops to 1500-2000′ under clear sky overnight. About 0.5” WE is in the daytime forecast. That’s 4-6” of regular quality snow. Another 0.2” falls overnight, for another 2” of fresh. Wind: WSW 20-30 early, SW 10-25 in the afternoon, and NW 10-20 overnight.
Thursday looks clear and sunny with precip moving in overnight as a deep low pressure system moves northward along the coast. The snow level will be 1500-2000′ during the morning. Temps rise just above freezing between 5000′ and 7000′ in the afternoon. The snow level will fluctuate quite a bit overnight due to the track of this storm system; temps at 5000′ will be between 0C and 3C. Expect mixed precipitation. About 0.3” WE falls. Just call it mixed or wet snow and leave it there. Wind: NW 10-20 early, S 15-30 in the afternoon building to SW 25-50 overnight.
Heavy snow is in the forecast on Friday. The snow level will be about 3500′. It falls to 2500′ on Saturday morning. The forecast could change, but as of now, up to two feet of snow is forecast in that 24 hour period with the heavies snow on Friday night. Let’s keep an eye on this one! Weekend forecast: snow flurries. Should be a fun week up in the hills!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling
Volunteers needed! Columbia Area Mountain Bike Advocate (CAMBA) is doing small projects at the Syncline this winter: treadwork and trail maintenance. Show that we care and want to protect it! Due to COVID restrictions, work party numbers are limited, so if you can help, contact Ann 509-637-three seven one three. Hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and sightseers all welcome! Do be aware of the possibility of freeze-thaw (muddy) conditions, especially on trails that are not under a tree canopy. Do not ride if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing when you want to ride. The soil structure will be liquefied, and you will do permanent damage to trails. Consider riding gravel roads instead.
