Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Our mountain picked up another 16” of snow over the last 24 hours with 4” of that overnight. It’s all dry, blower powder, but it will be wind-affected today. Predicted snowfall today has backed off, but there will be plenty of fabulous riding both on and off the groom. Wear your beacon. Ride with a buddy. Keep them in sight. Tree wells can be deadly, and deep snow suffocation is a thing. Weather for the rest of the week: cold enough for snow on the slopes through at least Sunday morning.

Orographic snow continues on Tuesday morning with partly cloudy sky midday and a shot at convective snowfall and a random thunderstorm this afternoon. The snow level will be 500′ this morning, 1500′ this afternoon, and 0′ overnight. Daytime snowfall will be around 0.3” water equivalent (WE), for 3-4”. Some of that is convective in nature and impossible to predict. Another 0.1” WE is forecast overnight, for another inch of new. Wind: W 20-30 this morning, WSW 15-25 this afternoon, SW 5-10 in the evening, and variable to 10mph overnight.

Snowfall predictions are all over the map on Wednesday thanks to the convective nature of the snowfall. We could see anything from 3-10” in the 24 hour period. There’s also a good shot at some sunshine during the afternoon. The snow level will be 0′ in the morning, 1500-2000′ in the afternoon, and back down to 0′ overnight. Wind: Variable to 10mph for the 24 hour period.

We see a similar setup on Thursday daytime with a better shot at more widespread precip Thursday night into Friday as a weak low sweeps through. Expect light snow early, clear sky midday, and snow overnight. Daytime snowfall should be in the 0.1-0.3” WE range, for 1-3” new. Overnight, 0.2-0.4” WE is forecast, for 2-5” more. Wind: Variable to 10 during the day, and NW 10-20 overnight. Flurries are possible on Friday and Saturday with somewhat warmer weather. Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much is going on in the wind forecast for the next few days. We starts Tuesday with wind in the teens in the eastern Gorge and single digits in the western Gorge. That’s westerlies. Afternoon sees a weather system approach. The wind turns light/variable through most of the Gorge with 10-15 west of Stevenson and at Viento. River flow is 173kcfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast is 46F. Wednesday starts with E 10-15 at Rooster and Stevenson, then briefly picks up to 20-25 near Stevenson. Afternoon wind drops to 5mph in the west and picks up to E 10mph east of Hood River. Thursday will be light and variable.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Scattered sprinkles persists all the way through Tuesday. Light snowfall moves in overnight for just a trace by Wednesday morning. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and mid 40’s later. Light westerlies turn nearly calm this afternoon. 97% chance of rainbows. Wednesday will see snow flurries, then some sunshine, then some rain with a chance of thunder. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and mid 40’s later. Light easterlies. 52% chance of rainbows. Thursday will be cloudy to start with sun midday and flurries overnight. Temps will be in the mid-upper 20’s early and mid 40’s later. Light and variable wind. 22% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

Well. Seems that the trails are all covered in snow again! We’re also in a freeze-thaw cycle, and trails will be especially susceptible to damage with all this moisture. Don’t ride during the day if it froze last night. Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Also, there is logging happening on Underwood. Do not enter closed areas. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, and the gate is still closed at Binn’s Hill.
