Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Tuesday starts off clear on the mountain and turns cloudy in the afternoon. We move back into a more active weather pattern starting midday Wednesday. Models agree on the weather through Thursday morning, but vary widely on precipitation amount and type for Thursday through Saturday.

For Tuesday, expect sunshine and cold weather early as the cold pool spills over the Cascade Crest. High clouds move in this afternoon with warmer air that scours the upper levels of that cold pool. The free air freezing level will be at the surface early, 500′ in the afternoon, and 5000′ after midnight. No precip. Wind will be S 10 or so all day, rising to SSW 15 overnight.

Wednesday starts out cloudy and turns snowy. It’s possible that snow will be mixed with snain or even rain at some point, but there’s not much daytime precip, so it doesn’t matter much. Overnight precip is really tricky; the incoming system has a temp of 2-6 degrees C, but the cold pool may mitigate some of that warmth. The snow level will be 5000′ ish all day and 4500′ after midnight. During the day, about 0.1” water value (WV) falls, for up to 1” of snow. Overnight precip of 0.6” WV falls as a mix of wet snow and freezing rain, for 2-4” of new snow. Wind will be SSW 15 early, S 25 in the afternoon, and SW 25 overnight.

Thursday’s not really possible to predict at this point. The GFS keeps the mountain dry in the morning and brings in about a foot of snow overnight. The Euro has light snowfall in the morning and keeps the heavy precipitation north of the Columbia overnight. Either way, it looks like the snow level will be about 4500′ during the day. Same thing Friday: very heavy snow on the GFS with the same snow too far north on the Euro. Models do agree on warm, tropically-inspired weather for Saturday and the first half of Sunday followed by a powerful cold front and heavy snow Sunday afternoon.

Gorge Wind Forecast

River flow is 150kcfs and temp is 41 degrees. Wednesday brings easterlies at 40-45 near Rooster and 30-35 near Stevenson. Those hold all day and pick up to 50-60mph near Rooster overnight. Thursday starts with 35-40 near Rooster and 25-30 near Stevenson. The wind will back off to 20-25 in the afternoon and go calm overnight.

Road and Mountain Biking

Lower Syncline might be okay today, but the upper parts are likely to be in the freeze thaw. Stay on the trails. Don’t shortcut the corners. Remember, if you damage the trails, volunteers have to spend timing fixing them rather than building new trails. You could also try any trail under the canopy in Post or on Hospital Hill – those should be frozen. Lower Whoopee is exposed to the open air, so don’t do that! There are lots of other options: gravel grinding, road biking, trainer biking. Don’t knock ’em ’til you try ’em!

Coming up Wednesday, there’s free yoga at 10am at the FISH food bank in Hood River. Mark your calendar now for the Super Wolf Blood Moon eclipse on Sunday night. Good luck finding somewhere cloud-free!
