Gorge Wind Forecast

Strong westerlies are on tap for Tuesday followed by moderate to strong westerlies for Wednesday and Thursday and Friday, the time period also known as “the rest of the week”. For the weekend, we’re looking at hot weather and east wind. Get out and enjoy the cool, windy weekdays!

Tuesday starts off with gradients of .13 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc), which basically means you’ll find wind wherever you look today. A passing shortwave (see those high clouds) may cause some trouble near Swell today, but you should be able to get a couple hours there too. Expect 24-28 between Viento and Mosier to start the day. By afternoon, we’ll see 23-26 at Stevenson with 26-29 from Viento to Arlington. 30-33 is possible from Rowena to Rufus. Will the direction be correct at The Wall? Well, nobody can actually predict that, so you might as well get out there and check it out! As for Swell, there will probably be a couple solid hours late morning, but the afternoon is anyone’s guess. River flow is 132kcfs and temp is 68 degrees. High temp today in Hood River: 79.

Another little weather system swings through on Wednesday for another round of westerlies. You’ll know the weather system by the afternoon high clouds. Morning wind starts at 21-24 from Viento to Arlington with 10-13 at Stevenson. By midday, we’ll have 23-26 from Stevenson to Rufus with 14-17 at Arlington. That’s the story for the rest of the day too, except that Swell will probably drop to 18-22 in the afternoon. High temp: 76.

Thursday brings more river fun, even for those of you (like me) who can’t hit the water until later. Morning wind: 15-18 from Viento to Hood River. Afternoon: 23-26 from Stevenson to Rufus with 10-13 east of there. Swell: probably fine. Friday: gusty 21-24. Saturday and Sunday: easterlies and HOT, with temps in the 90’s on Saturday and near 100 on Sunday.

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death.
