For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Friday looks interesting… yeah, words of doom, I know. We starts with partly cloudy sky. A weather system moves in during the afternoon. It currently looks like we may see a mix of rain and snow at 5000′ overnight with a switch to snow Saturday morning. Wait n’ see. The next system is slated for Saturday night. Same thing there – possibly too warm for snow to start, followed by the snow level crashing on Sunday morning.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We have light westerlies this morning, and the wind will just keep on fading as the day goes on. Wednesday looks windier: widespread W 13-16 early. The wind will pick up from Mosier to Arlington at W 25-29 between 10am and 2pm with the western Gorge seeing gusty 18-22. After 2pm, the wind will back off to 20-23 through the entire Gorge. Thursday starts with W 10-13 and backs off to light and variable wind after 1pm.

Random Morning Thoughts

Today is #GivingTuesday. This is your chance to share your good fortune with those who are less fortunate than you. Some of you are reading this and thinking, “I need to hold on to what I have because (insert reason).” If that’s the case, I’d like to encourage you to think small. You don’t have to make a big cash donation to a charity to make a difference in a life. As a matter of fact, the small things you do may have a bigger impact than an impersonal cash donation.

For example, there was a gentleman digging in the dumpsters at my condo last night looking for cans. I said hello, and observed that it was dark and cold and it was late at night to be doing his job. He laughed and said that he was getting low on gas. I gave him all the cans in my recycling and a couple of bucks that were in my ashtray. He was stoked. What was nothing for me was a lot to him. He was gracious and happy, and I felt grateful and happy too. That moment of connection and happiness was worth far more than what I was able to give.

You get to choose what’s within your means on #GivingTuesday. I’d like to encourage you to do something that benefits someone right here, right now. You’ll have to figure out what that is – it could be something as small as saying something nice to someone who looks like they could use a pick-me-up. The benefit of making #GivingTuesday about present-moment helping is that you benefit as much as the other person – generosity is good for your soul. That pleasant feeling will encourage you to give more in the future.

If you’re really stuck on what to do, you can clear some time in your schedule tomorrow night and show up to help wash, sort and repair bikes for the Hood River nonprofit Anson’s Bike Buddies. Meet behind Cascade Eye Center in Hood River starting at 5pm. Your help will ensure that local kids get bikes for the holidays.

It’s #GivingTuesday. What small steps can you take to give back to the people around you? You’re awesome for thinking about this. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

No, really. Post Canyon and Whoopdee are too muddy to ride. Really. It’s almost too muddy to jog in Post Canyon right now. Please stop riding the trails. When you ride in the mud, you cup the trails, which keeps them from draining. That damage is nearly impossible to fix, and the time volunteers spend fixing it would be better spent building new trails or making existing trails more awesome. Consider riding the gravel roads instead. There are lots of them around here, and you won’t be doing trail damage if you ride on the roads.

Upcoming Events

It’s Tuesday. There’s free yoga at Flow at 4:30 and at HAVEN (Strong Women Yoga) in The Dalles at 5. There’s pickup touch rugby at 5 at the Hood River Marina Park. There’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu tonight from 5pm to 9pm. At 6:30 this evening, there’s meditation at Yoga Samadhi led by community members until the monks return. This remains, and most likely always will, my favorite activity of the week.

Coming up tomorrow, Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike repair party at their storage unit behind Cascade Eye Center in Hood River. Party starts at 5pm. Come help fix up bikes for local kids in need! Mark your calendars for a work party in Post Canyon next Saturday. It’s the last scheduled work party of the season, and we need all of you here to help out.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
