This morning, Wednesday, is starting off with a heavier marine layer in Portland. That’s given us stronger gradients than yesterday, and will set us up for a little more wind today. Once again, reality will likely beat the models, which suggest 20-23 today. With a .12 (pdx-dls) gradient this morning, plus another .03 out east, and a 1029mb (I love mixing measurement methods) offshore high, we’ll have plenty of gradient to bump up the wind speed. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
Expect 21-24 right off the bat this morning from Viento to Hood River, maybe at Mosier too. By mid to late morning, we’ll have 24-27 from Viento to Mosier. The wind should fill in to Doug’s Beach by this afternoon. Judging by the last couple of days, the wind should hold pretty much all day near Swell, so don’t freak out if you can’t get there right away this morning (I’m talking to myself, because I have to work for a few hours). Stevenson will start off light today and build to 20-23 this afternoon. The Maryhill stretch of river is a little trickier, but it’s likely to peak in the 16-19 range during the late afternoon.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, is your last chance for west wind for a few days, so get it if you can. The one great thing about that is that it gives me an excuse to take a day or two off later this week and ride my bike early in the morning instead of forecasting! Anyway, expect 20-23 for Dawn Patrol on Wednesday from Viento to Swell. The wind should pick up to 22-25 from Viento to Mosier by late morning, with Stevenson joining at 18-22 and Doug’s joining in at 20-23 in the afternoon.
As of this morning, it looks like we’ll see light and variable wind on Thursday, E 25-30 on Friday, light easterlies on Saturday, and light and variable wind on Sunday. Long range forecasts, as we all know, are rather unreliable, so hold off on making any decisions. For example: when I looked last night, Monday looked like 30-35. When I looked this morning, Monday looked like 10-15. So, there. Long-range forecasts are not all that accurate.

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.
Random Morning Thoughts
I was having dinner with a friend of mine the other night, and he was telling me about selective attention. Basically, our minds often filter out things that are unrelated to our worldview, expectations, or past experiences.
This isn’t domain-specific: we filter out things we see, we filter out things we read, we filter things we hear, and we even filter things we feel or experience. One thing we seem to do that’s particularly worrisome is filtering out positive experiences we didn’t receive as children. In other words, people who are survivors of Crappy Parenting Disorder may not be able to receive emotional nourishment from others.
Those experiences never got deeply wired in, so they can become invisible to the individual. Not only are they invisible, but the individual may not have a concept of the vast range of emotional experiences available to human beings. What we’ve never experienced becomes outside our ability to perceive!
This might be your experience – you may suspect you’ve been missing out on something, but you may have no idea of what that thing is. Insidious, right?
It is, however, possible to change this. I believe that we’re hardwired to receive emotional nourishment. It’s just a matter of reactivating those neural networks. You can do this by imagining what it would feel like to have people give you the love and attention you really want (and yes, it is okay to want to be loved and to want others to pay attention to you!) Pretend it’s happening when you’re around others. Eventually something will click, and you’ll realize it’s been around you all this time, but you’ve just been filtering it out.
Whoa, yeah, our minds are wild creatures, aren’t they? Endless learning and growth opportunities exist just under your skin. Pretty awesome. Have an awesome day!
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
