Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Well. That was a ginormous day yesterday, eh? We have three more days of westerlies followed by a potential rest day on Friday followed by westerlies for the weekend. Hopefully you’ve been feeding yourself well, stretching, hydrating, and doing what it takes to keep your body running smoothly!

Tuesday kicks off with pressures of 30.21/30.09/30.07 for gradients of 0.12 and 0.02. An offshore low is pushing towards Vancouver Island, and there are no marine clouds in the metro area. Today’s wind focuses on areas west of The Dalles. Strongest: early. We start with 22-25 from Viento to the White Salmon Bridge. Stevenson: less than 10mph to start. East of Mosier (where you shouldn’t be due to wildfire evacuation levels), the wind is generally 10-13mph. The wind holds for a few hours and then dips to 16-19 (Stevenson to Mosier) due to midday heating in the metro area. Wait until late afternoon or early evening, and you’ll catch the rebound: 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier with 14-17 from Lyle to Avery. River flow over the last 24 hours was 95-182kcxfs, river temp is 70.52F, and high temp forecast is 84F.

The low I mentioned before moves into BC on Wednesday. High pressure rebuilds offshore. Models are not keen on marine clouds for the west side, but they are excited about the afternoon temperature gradient across the Cascades. Expect dawn patrol at 23-26 from Viento to Mosier with 11-14 east of Mosier and light wind in Stevenson. Models want to shift the wind east. If they’re right, Viento-Mosier will drop to gusty 20-24 midday while Lyle-Arlington slowly builds to 28-32. Threemile: 26-29. High temp: 82F for Hood River and 89F for Arlington.

Models give us as least a bit of a marine push on Thursday. Those low clouds will help, but a weak disturbance well offshore will impact the ability of the Northeast Pacific High to lend two helping hands. As of this morning, Thursday’s looking like 20-23 from Viento to Mosier to start. Afternoon: 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier and 23-26 form Lyle to Rufus. High temp: 76F for Hood River and 80F for Arlington.

Extended: Ensembles are now liking the idea of a light wind day on Friday. That’s good news for the fire crews and for tired bodies. Westerlies return in the mid-20s for the weekend along with the potential for slightly warmer weather. Have fun on the river!

Cycling

Kreps land (Hospital Hill) is now closed due to fire danger. Underwood usually follows this quickly. Same with Whoopdee. Given the proximity of Whoopdee to the Microwave Fire, it’s best to avoid the area and give fire crews easy access to the roads. Ape Canyon and Plains of Abraham are open per USFS website. Patchy snow and downed trees were there as of last report, 6/24. 44 Road trails are all open and clear, including upper 450 and Fifteenmile. Gunsight is open. Boulder Lakes and other more remote trails are not bucked out yet. Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
