Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Above-freezing weather continues on the slopes through at least Saturday and most likely through Sunday. Most members of the ensembles of the models suggest we’ll see a cold front swing through on Monday. This brings our first snow in a good long while. After that, things are rather unclear, but models suggest intermittent snowfall rather than an extended, multi-week dry period.

For Tuesday, the day starts mostly sunny and turns cloudy. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 8500′ in the morning, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 7500′ overnight. Wind will be NW 10-15 in the morning, 15-20 in the afternoon, and 20-25 overnight.

Mild weather continues on Wednesday. The day starts cloudy and turns partly cloudy in the afternoon. Clear sky returns overnight. FAF: 7500′ in the morning rising to 10,000′ overnight. NW wind at 20mph starts the day. By the afternoon, the wind turns to NNE 15-25 and fades to N 10-15 overnight. That direction could bring some downslope warming. Enjoy those pockets of warm air! Even warmer weather is forecast on Thursday. Expect sunshine all day on the slopes with the FAF at 11,000′ and temps rising into the low 50’s. Wind: N 10-20 early becoming NW 15-20 in the afternoon and E 15-20 overnight.

Clear weather is likely to stick around through the weekend. Thanks to clear sky overnight, the snow will refreeze. That leaves us with a transition to corn snow and then loose granular snow by the weekend. Pack your sunscreen and wax accordingly. Next snowfall is Monday. Cross your fingers for the high end of the forecasts, and enjoy the sun until then!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Three days of light to moderate westerlies are on tap. If you want stronger wind, head to the coast for side-offshore and waves. For the Gorge, Tuesday will be light westerlies, 5-10mph all through the Gorge to start the day with the wind fading east of Mosier by late morning. The wind could pick up to 10-13mph from Stevenson to Hood River. River flow is 146kcfs, river temp is 36F, and high temp forecast is 50F. Wednesday starts with 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River with light westerlies to the east. The wind fades to 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River and picks up to 7-10 east to Arlington. High temp: 57F. Thursday starts with 10-13 from Stevenson to Viento with light westerlies to the east. Afternoon: 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 10-13 east to Arlington. High temp: 60F.

Coast (north/central/south, waves). Tuesday: 5-10/15-20/25-30, W swell 8′ @ 14 seconds. Wednesday: 5-10/15-25/25-30, W 9′ @ 13. Thursday: 20-25/25-30/25-30, W 10′. Sauvie’s: possibly 15-18 on Thursday.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Partly to mostly cloudy sky is the plan today. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and near 50 later. Light westerlies. No rainbows. Wednesday will be cloudy and then partly cloudy. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and upper 50’s later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Thursday will be sunny after a partial nothing. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and near 60 in the afternoon. Light to moderate westerlies. No rainbows.

Cycling

Out in the woods, the trails above 1500′-2000′ are snow covered. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!
