Tuesday. Another beautiful late summer day…

At seven o’clock this morning, there was west wind at Rooster and east wind at Stevenson, a ridiculous combination given the E .06 gradient between Portland and The Dalles. Just pretend that didn’t happen, and expect the easterlies to pick up to 20-25 mid-morning between Rooster and Steven’s Locks, holding through about 2pm. After that,…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Thursday sees high pressure off the coast and lower pressure inland, a nice setup for a west wind day. Expect 13-16 to start the day from Viento to Mosier. In the afternoon, the wind should pick up to 21-24 from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles.

As of right now, models suggest we’ll see a light wind day on Friday. However, models also suggest solid high pressure off the coast and low pressure in the desert. That means models could be downplaying by quite a bit the wind potential. Let’s call Friday 13-16 for now. The general weekend forecast includes weak weather systems moving through. This is a setup that’s conducive to gusty, somewhat unpredictable wind, but wind nonetheless.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m pretty sure that all of us out there want to be as content as we possibly can be. I’m hoping that’s universal, because I can’t imagine people wanting to spend as much time as possible in a miserable state. Despite this desire for peace, we spend an awful lot of time doing things that undermine a happy mindset.

One simple way to generate more contentment is to live in the now. But what does that really mean in a society where it’s imperative to plan ahead? For me, this means being clear about my goals while not holding tight to them as the only possible “right” outcome. When we settle on one outcome, we generate worry in the now and disappointment in the future.

For example, say you’re set on getting a specific job with a certain pay rate. The interview’s coming up, and you worry about what you’ll say, how you might mess it up, and you feel a lot of pressure because you want That Job. Plus, you have plans for That Money. You worry about what will happen if you don’t get the job and the money. You cling to the idea that this future job is already yours. By not leaving other options open to yourself, you create a black-and-white scenario of doom if the outcome is negative. You’re disappointed. Miserable. You obsess over what you could have changed.

A healthier, in-the-now approach is to say, “I’d like that job,” and take concrete steps to help you get it. The key is to not act as if it’s yours already. Let go of the if-thens and what-ifs. Find as much contentment in your current situation rather than basing your happiness on some future possible outcome. Leave space for other happy outcomes to arise. Plan for the future, take steps to make the future brighter, but don’t hold tightly to what’s not yet yours. That can only result in worry and disappointment. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
