Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Hopefully you survived yesterday’s heat. And hopefully you’re ready for more today; we’re looking at a high of 105F or so, but at least the wind will be back! Expect the power of the wind to be less than you’re used to – there’s actually an equation to calculate this, and it says you’ll have less power with more heat. Moderate westerlies today and tomorrow give way to stronger westerlies Thursday and Friday. Disregard anything anyone says about the weekend at this point – models and their ensembles are all over the place with the forecast.

Tuesday kicks off with pressures of 29.93/29.92/29.93 for gradients of 0.01 and E0.01. Models like the idea of the westerlies picking up to 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier by early afternoon. They kick the wind up a bit more, maybe 19-22 from Mosier to Doug’s late in the day with 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River and 11-14 or a touch more at Rufus. River flow yesterday was 107-210kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 105F. Eek. That’s too hot!

Wednesday starts with 15-18 from Viento to the Hatchery. Models knock the wind down to 10-13 mid-morning before bringing it back at 16-19 from Stevenson to Doug’s in the afternoon. Rufus: 10-13. High temp: still triple digits… 100 degrees.

High clouds, instability, lesser temps, and bigger pressure gradients make for more wind, but gusty wind, on Thursday. Dawn Patrol kicks off with 21-24 from Viento to the Hatchery. Hold out a little bit for 24-27 from Stevenson to Mosier, and then Stevenson to Doug’s. Models knock the western Gorge wind down to the upper teens or low 20’s mid-afternoon, but they bring it back late afternoon. We’ll have 25-28 from Stevenson to Avery with 17-20 at Rufus. High temp: still hot… 95 degrees. It’s worth noting that there’s a fair bit of spread in the wind speed forecast from the ensembles for Thursday, so we’ll revisit this tomorrow. Better agreement is present for Friday’s forecast.

Cooler air gets better penetration on Friday for 27-31 right off the bat. Where? Viento or Stevenson to Mosier. Strong westerlies eventually spread as far east as Rufus, and slightly lesser wind should make it to Arlington. High temps will be down 10 degrees or more – expect low 80’s near Hood River.

Models are very certain that Friday will be a big day on the river. Starting Saturday, they are all over the place. Some ensemble members have zero wind. Some have westerlies gusting to 40mph. Some even have light easterlies. Similar variety exists in the forecast for Sunday. So, we’ll leave it with Friday and see if things are more clear tomorrow. Speaking of tomorrow (Wednesday), I am on call tonight into tomorrow night. It’s possible I may be unable to do a forecast tomorrow morning. Have a great day today. Stay cool!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
