Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Reality didn’t bring the rain in yesterday, but it did bring a few hours of SUP foil friendly wind at the Hatchery. At least, it appeared to be SUP foil conditions, because there were more of the flotsam and jetsam than any other floating objects! We’ll see another day of westerlies today and a lighter round tomorrow. Easterlies, strong enough to get you on the river, arrive for Thursday and Friday.

Tuesday’s pressures start at 30.05/29.99/29.98 for gradients of 0.06 and 0.01. It’s worth noting that there’s strong offshore high pressure as well. This will likely kick the wind up a notch from what models predict. Early wind was in the 20-23 range at Viento with single digits to teens everywhere else. If you’re wanting the Stevenson-Hood River stretch, you’ll have to wait until the clouds burn off mid-afternoon. Between now and then… Viento will do what Viento will do. Let’s give it upper teens to low 20’s to start. Models suggest the wind will drop to 13-16 and spread from Viento to Mosier for the morning. The wind then rises to 20-23 from Mosier to The Dalles (because sunshine and clear sky) late morning or early afternoon. Wait until the clouds burn back more, perhaps mid-afternoon, and we should see 21-24 from Stevenson to Rufus thanks to that strong offshore high pressure. River flow yesterday was 61-83kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 67F.

Wednesday starts with 17-20 from Viento to Swell with light/variable wind to the east. A weak system disrupts the wind midday and knocks it down to 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River. Afternoon ind should rise to 14-17 (I initially typed 114-176) from Stevenson to Mosier. High temp: 69F under clear sky.

Thursday sees a ridge of high pressure really build in. Warmest temps shift to the west side. The wind switches direction. You’ll find easterlies at 15-20 near Stevenson and Viento. Iwash (Rooster) Rock: 20-25. After 2pm, the wind drops to 15mph all the way from Iwash to Viento. High temp: 74F. Slightly stronger easterlies are forecast on Friday with slightly warmer temps. Models hint at lesser wind for the weekend followed by a shot at westerlies when the next system approaches early next week. Have a great day on the water today!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club has their weekly workout at Mayer Park at 6pm on Tuesday. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Paddle folks (OC/Surfski) meet at the Hatch Thursday evenings for laps. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

Lots of perfect dirt out there right now – don’t ride in mud or you’ll do permanent damage. Speaking of mud, today’s forecast contains enough rain to turn Post (and maybe some other trails) into muddy messes. Hesitate before riding on Tuesday. Trails on private land that were previously closed due to fire danger (Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee) have reopened. No trails have closed yet due to snow. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
