Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s a sunny, warm start to the day on (most of) the ski slopes. Clouds move in this afternoon, and mixed precip arrives tonight. Models show mixed precip all the way through the end of the week as cold air in the Gorge meets warm air on the west side. This is going to cause major icing issues for the resorts. Expect lifts to be delayed or not running at all. Be kind to the resorts and their staff. They don’t want this any more than you do, and they are doing everything they can to get lifts open!

Expect sunshine and above-freezing temps at some elevations on the slopes. High clouds arrive early afternoon. Mixed precip, snain, freezing rain, etc., arrive in the evening and then (probably) switch to snow for a period tonight. About 0.4” water equivalent (WE) of mixed precip is expected. I’m not guessing at what will be snow and what will be something else, because, well, it’s just guesswork at this point. Wind will be W 15 this morning, SW 20-30 this afternoon, and SW 20-35 overnight.

Wednesday may starts with snow and may start with mixed precip. Temps at 850mb (5000′) bounce around between +1C and +2C during the day before encountering -2C air from the east and +1C air from the west overnight. Daytime could bring some west snow at 5000′, but it’s more likely to be a mix of snow, sleet, ice, etc. Above 6000′: snow. The current forecast calls for 1.2” WE during the day and 1.7” WE overnight. The snow level may drops to 4500′ overnight as the cold pool deepens, but we may stay with mixed precip and a snow level over 6000′. Add in wind: SW 20-35 in the morning, W 45 in the afternoon, and W 40-50 overnight. What a mess. Ditto on Thursday with 0.8” WE in the day followed by 0.5” WE overnight. Seriously, folks, be really kind to the ski resorts. They are doing their absolute best to communicate and also to get lifts running. They could use some love from you.
