Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Looks like we’ll be holding on to some sort of west wind until Saturday, after which we head into hotter, calmer weather for a few days. The details of this heat wave are still not clear. Even the idea that the wind will shut down isn’t a certainty. Now, back to my regularly scheduled yard sale: Armstrong 7’7” x 121L SUP foil board, like new, used about 6 times – $1900. Takuma TK carbon wingfoil board, 110L – $700. Takuma ProFoil 1900 wing with 75cm mast: $550. Combine the board and foil for an excellent beginner setup (it’s what I learned on). Lemond 53cm steel road bike (fits up to 5’8” human) – $250. PPC Link SUP foil/surf foil board, 6’4” x 118L: $800. Email twomirrors at gmail to purchase this awesome gear.

Tuesday kicks off with gradients less than model predictions. That’s not what we want! Pressures are 30.06/30.00/29.99 for 0.06 and 0.01. That was just enough for 18-21 from Viento to Swell for the Dawn Patrol session. Get it quickly; models knock pressures down early afternoon as the metro area heats up. The wind is likely to drop to 13-16 (Stevenson to Mosier) early afternoon with less tot he east. Desert heat outpaces west side heating late in the day for 17-20 from Stevenson to Doug’s. River flow yesterday was 100-151kcfs, river temp is 71F, and high temp forecast is 85F.

A frontal system swings through on Wednesday, impacts wind quality, and shifts you eastward in the afternoon. Be prepared for gusty conditions. Morning wind will be 20-23 from Viento to Rufus with 14-17 at Stevenson and 12-15 at Arlington. Midday wind levels out at 20-23 from Stevenson to Avery; Rufus dips a bit and so does Arlington. Don’t worry about that dip. After the front swings through, you’ll find gusty 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River with gusty 23-26 from Mosier to Rufus and 20-23 at Arlington. High temp: 80F.

Standard mid-summer weather continues on Thursday. Westerlies start the day at 12-15 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. Westerlies rise to 17-20 midday in that same stretch of river. Afternoon wind will drop in the west – 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier – and rise to the east. You’ll find 21-24 from Lyle to Rufus with 18-21 at Arlington. Models suggest low 20’s on Friday, mid teens on Saturday, and low double digits on Sunday. That said, there’s quite a bit of model spread starting Sunday, so hold that forecast lightly. Have a great day on the water!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
