Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! It’s been a tough morning to get out a timely forecast after sleeping off yesterday’s session and managing all the incoming Wind Johnny texts. Ah, what a day it will be! Very strong to nuking westerlies are in the cards today from Stevenson to Rufus. Tomorrow looks plenty strong and will focus on the Corridor. The wind is likely to shut off and give you a rest day on Thursday. But, good news, the latest model run brings back just enough west wind late Friday and keeps it going through the super-hot, 100+ degree heat this weekend. Fingers crossed this forecast holds!

Before I forget, my friend lost some gear at Rufus yesterday. If you happened to find a Takuma board/foil combo floating in the river, please drop it off at Celilo restaurant in Hood River. If you happened to see a couple in a white sedan lurking around Rufus and got the license plate, please let me know. They stole a paddle from the boat ramp. Okay, on to the forecast.

Let’s look at Tuesday, shall we? (stop blowing up my phone, boardheads!) The day kicks off with pressures of 30.25/30.14/30.05 and very strong offshore high pressure. Gradients are 0.11 and 0.09, but with this particular setup, wind will outperform gradients and forecast models. These gradients scream Mosier-to-Rufus, but Stevenson-to-Hood River will rip too. Call it 21-24 to start from Viento to Swell with 17-20 pretty much everywhere else between Stevenson and Rufus. Arlington starts at 13-16. By late morning, we’re looking at 27-30 from Stevenson to Mosier, followed quickly by Lyle, Rowena, and Doug’s. It won’t be long before Rufus joins in. Afternoon westerlies look like 27-30 from Stevenson to Hood River with 29-33 from Mosier to Rufus. 33-36 is not out of the question from Lyle to Rufus. Arlington eventually rises to 26-29 (which is more like 20-23 at the Hatch). East of there, expect 17-20. River flow over the last 24 hours was 140-204kcfs, river temp is 65.48F, and high temp forecast is 76F for Hood River and 82F for Arlington.

Strong offshore high pressure shakes hands with desert heat on Wednesday and keeps the westerlies going. Dawn Patrol from Viento to Mosier could be as strong as 26-29. The wind then drops to 24-27 from Stevenson to Mosier and holds. Lyle, Rowena, and Doug’s join at 24-27 in the afternoon. Rufus will be 17-20 or so. High temp: 82F for Hood River.

Venmo

Thursday sees high pressure build inland. Heat equalizes across the Cascades. While we may see some early westerlies, the wind is likely to shut off in the afternoon. Try Jones, Sauvie Island, or the Coast for better results.

Extended: In a fun twist, models are currently calling for the heat low to shift east of the Cascades on Friday afternoon. This, despite 100 degree weather, sets us up for light to moderate westerlies through the weekend. Let’s not call this for-sure yet, but it’s starting to look good. 100+ degrees and breezy is a heck of a lot better than 100+ degrees and dead calm. Have a great day on the river today!
