Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! If you’ve been looking for a rest day, today’s it. You’ll still want to plan for the river, as it’s going to be hot and muggy. Westerlies return on Wednesday and stick around Thursday and Friday. Models are all over the place on Saturday’s forecast – some say zero wind, and some are much more optimistic. Nearly all the ensemble members agree on a much windier stretch Sunday through Tuesday with the caveat that there’s a 15 degree range in Sunday’s high temp for The Dalles, meaning there’s definitely some uncertainty in the details.

Tuesday starts off with pressures of 29.98/29.92/29.91 for gradients of 0.06 and 0.01. That’s enough to give us a brief period of 12-15ish from Viento (a little more there) to Swell this morning. A compact and disruptive little low zips up the coast this afternoon while heating intensifies and equalizes all the way from the metro area to the desert. Result: calm wind or nearly so this afternoon. Add in a chance of thunderstorms for some excitement. River flow over the last 24 hours was 120-167kcfs, river temp is 69.26F, and high temp forecast is nearly 100F and muggy.

Stronger westerlies return on Wednesday, but interference is present. The previously mentioned low zips inland in the morning and destabilizes things. Lightning is a distinct possibility. Offshore, another system moves NW. We’ll be relying on thermals tomorrow and attempting to overcome the instability. In other words, there’s a high probability for wind but a low reliability forecast. For now, let’s call the early session 19-22 from Stevenson to Mosier with 11-14 east of Mosier to Arlington. That assumes we’re not having thunderstorms. If we are, forget about the wind! Midday wind rises to gusty 17-21 from Stevenson to Swell with 15-18 from Mosier to Rufus. Afternoon westerlies, thanks to a multi-factor low in the desert, rise to gusty 26-29 from Mosier to Arlington, strongest between Lyle and Rufus (but probably the “wrong” direction at Rufus). High temp: 91F with a chance of thunder and lightning early.

Active weather conditions on Thursday make for another round of gusty and inconsistent west wind. Dawn patrol kicks off post-frontal and clear (no marine layer) with gusty 23-26 from Viento to Arlington and 16-19 at Stevenson. By late morning or early afternoon, the wind picks up to 25-28 from Stevenson to Arlington with 22-25 at Threemile. An afternoon thermal component keeps things going through the evening. The metro area will be clear, which almost certainly means the Swell-Hood River stretch will drop off in the afternoon. High temp: 90F

Extended: a lesser temp gradient on Friday leads to lesser, but steadier, westerlies at 17-20 or so. Saturday, as I mentioned previously, is all over the map. With a hot day predicted all across the PNW, the best chance of wind will be between Stevenson and Swell late afternoon. But hold that lightly for now as it could change for the better or for the worse! The long-range forecast brings a cooldown for the west side sometime in the Sunday-Tuesday period. Models aren’t certain when the cooldown will arrive, but they’re pretty optimistic about wind all three of those days. It’s a long ways out, but I’d say it’s worth clearing some space in your life to play in the river. Stay cool out there today. See you on the water soon!
