Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! A late consult call last night kept me awake for a bit, and so I woke up late this morning. And my goodness was it warm. But we also have a bit of wind to start the day and should have just enough to get you on the river later. Stronger, but rather unreliable wind is forecast for Thursday. Friday’s looking like a good one – strong, steady westerlies combine with cooler weather and stick around all day. Looking at the weekend, we still have model confusion. Don’t make plans yet.

Thursday and Friday, however, will get you on the river. High clouds Thursday morning are indicative of a nearby weather system. That’ll swing through this afternoon and mess with your game plans. Get out early today for best results. Pressures at 5am were 29.83/29.77/29.77 for gradients of 0.06 and 0.00. A couple hours after dawn, westerlies should be in the 17-20 range from Viento to the Hatchery or perhaps Hood River. Mosier: 12-15. Stevenson will take a few hours and rise to join the fun. Mid to late morning westerlies will be 21-24 from Viento to Mosier with 15-18 out to Rufus. Stevenson: 17-20. This afternoon is tricky. That weather system I mentioned before will destabilize things. While there’s probably not enough instability for thunder, there’s enough to impact wind quality. A glance at the models has the wind at gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River and gusty 22-25 from Mosier to Arlington, but don’t get your hopes pinned on that. The Rufus area will be especially gusty as this system approaches and swings through. So, get on it early. Afternoon = bonus. River flow yesterday was 99-212kcfs, river temp is 73F, and high temp forecast is 95F.

Friday kicks off nearly ideal. Yes! Marine clouds push to Cascade Locks or a touch deeper into the Gorge. They’ll burn back by midday, and temps will climb across the region. For the strongest wind, go earlier. Want less? Go in the afternoon. Dawn Patrol kicks off with 27-31 from Viento to Mosier and quickly spreads to the Rufus stretch of the river. Stevenson, waiting patiently for the clouds to dissipate, will lag far behind. Mid-morning wind rises to 24-27 at Arlington with 27-31 from Viento to Rufus. As the clouds burn off, the wind drops a bit. Afternoon brings 25-28 from Stevenson to Rufus with 22-25 at Arlington. Late in the afternoon into the evening, the wind drops to 23-26 through the entire Gorge, all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. High temp: blissfully cool at 79F.

Models have decided you shall have light and variable wind over the weekend as temps equalize across the Cascades. Head to the coast or Sauvie Island for better results. Or ride a bike. Forecast certainty falls apart on Monday as a tropical storm confuses the weather models. Generally speaking, it looks like a series of lows will be offshore next week. That’s far from ideal for wind anywhere in the PNW, but at least it should help keep temps down. Have a great couple days on the river!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
