Thursday. Wind, wind, wind. It never gets boring.

Hopefully you’re not all worn out from this long windy stretch, because the windiness will not be stopping any time soon. High pressure in the Pacific, low pressure along the coast, and a heat low in the desert combine today for a nice round of westerlies. The 6am (yup, the cat got me up) gradients…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

The 6am (yup, the cat got me up) gradients were .08 (pdx-dls), .05 (dls-psc) and .58 (eph-dls), moderate for sure, but a good sign. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Expect a quick build to 21-24 by midday from Hood River to Doug’s with the Rufus stretch joining soon thereafter. During the afternoon, we’ll see 24-28 from Mosier to Rufus with a late build into the low twenties at Arlington. Swell is the questionable spot today; marine clouds made it that far last night, and so it’s a tricky place today. I suspect that Swell will see 24-28 this afternoon after the clouds burn back. Stevenson and Cascade Locks will have to wait for the clouds to burn off; then they too shall see 13-16.

Tomorrow sees a brief and weak ridge of high pressure during the morning followed by an approaching disturbance in the afternoon. That’ll start us off with 10-13 or less, with some wind possible between Steven’s Locks and Mosier. By afternoon, the Gorge will have gusty 25-29 from Steven’s Locks to Rufus with a bit less further east.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was talking to my current therapist yesterday, and he brought up my email habits, and by extension, my habit of posting my thoughts on my website and emailing my reflections to my subscribers every morning. I was like, “Oh shit. Here we go again with the pathologizing.” And then he asked me how I like my job. I smiled. Smiled isn’t strong enough. I glowed. “I love my job,” I said. His reply? “Oh, cool. Then we don’t need to talk about it.”

And that was that. It was so f***ing validating. A ten out of ten on the validation scale.

Each of us has something that strikes the “this is perfect for me” chord. One of my perfect things is this job. Sometimes we are totally baffled by the things that make other people glow. We try to convince them to shift perspectives; we push them to try the things that make us feel warm and fuzzy inside.

But the best way to make someone feel warm and fuzzy is to celebrate with them. You like kiteboarding? Sweet – it’s so amazing ripping on the river with no sail to block the view! You like paddling an OC1? Awesome – surfing downwind looks like so much fun! You like brewing beer? I bet it’s pretty awesome when you open a bottle and you’re like, “This tastes so good – I made something delish!”

So yeah, next time someone is stoked, be stoked with them. Stoke contains a positive feedback loop: the more you feed it, the more there is, and we all want more stoke. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

In an extremely exciting twist of fate, it’s party cloudy in Hood River this morning. It’s so cloudy that I’m considering breaking out my happy light to compensate for the missing 10% of the blue sky. Expect increasing blue in the sky today with temps in the low 60’s early and the low 80’s this afternoon. Moderate to strong wind. No rainbows.

Expect more sun tomorrow with temps in the low 60’s early and the low 80’s n the afternoon. Light wind early, strong wind late. No rainbows. Saturday looks cloudier with temps in the low 60’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Sunday looks even cloudier than Saturday with a very, very, very slight chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I went jogging on the Gorge 400 yesterday, and even that trail is dry. It’s in great shape, mind you, but dry as a bone. I’m glad we haven’t seen much thunder and lightning this summer. I like my trails green, not burnt.

Upcoming Events

There are three wind-related events this week: The Gorge Paddling Festival in Stevenson, with the big Wildside Relay downwind race happening on Saturday. Stevenson also has longboard windsurf racing on Saturday, with rigs available to rent for $25, and those races move to Hood River on Sunday. Cascade Locks hosts the Gorge Dinghy Invitational sailboat races Friday through Sunday.

Today’s events include a by-donation yoga class at Flow in Hood River at 8, another by-donation yoga class at Samadhi in White Salmon at 6:30, and the race-pace Post n’ Pint mountain bike ride at Dirty Fingers at 5:30. Do the ride, and you’ll get a free pint of beer. Also, the Tour will be on the TV in the evening at the shop.

Tomorrow morning at 7, it’s the best group run ever, the Kickstand Coffee Run. Jog 4.1 miles and you get a free cup of coffee and a donut. Also tomorrow morning at some horrendously early hour, there’s Iaido, so if you happen to have a Japanese sword, gi, and hakama lying around the house, you can join in on that.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
