Yesterday sure was a fun morning on the river, at least until the mid-morning die-off. I’m not sure why that happened; there really wasn’t any reason for it. But happen it did, and today’s another day, so get your car packed and ready to drive to a beach. With the clouds past Hood River today and an upper trough moving east into BC, the strongest, steadiest, most reliable wind will likely shift a bit east. That said, we had mid-twenties at the Hatch at 7am, so… Let’s roll with the 7am gradients: .12 (pdx-dls), .07 (dls-psc) and .44 (eph-dls) with a river water temp reading of 73 degrees. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
We’ll see gusty 23-26 at Swell and Mosier this morning with the Lyle to Rufus stretch joining at 24-28 by late morning. Stevenson, under the clouds, was in the upper teens early, so let’s call that place 15-18 this morning and gusty 21-24 this afternoon. Arlington will languish a bit, with 15-18 for much of the day and 24-27 late in the afternoon and evening. Swell and Hood River are wildcards today, despite what I said at the start of this paragraph; if those clouds burn back, we could easily see upper 20’s for a period, and if not, we won’t. So… best bet would be any beach from Mosier to Rufus today.
Tomorrow sees northerly flow develop over the region. That leaves us with W 10-13 in the morning and 13-16, maybe, late in the afternoon. The strongest of this not-so-strong wind will be near Hood River and Viento tomorrow, with Stevenson joining in after noon.

Random Morning Thoughts
As many of you know, I like to work with therapists. Self-discovery is fun, and it makes my life better. At one point, a therapist decided that my blog, especially this section, was of clinical significance. She decided this without reading my blog. That felt disrespectful and made me sad, because assumptions are the basis for much misunderstanding, and we all want to be understood and supported. In addition, had my name been Brene Brown or Anne Lamott, my work would have been celebrated, not questioned.
That brings me to what’s on my mind this morning. We expect people to behave, speak, share themselves, and dress within certain cultural norms. When they don’t, we subtly shame them and push them back to the middle of the bell curve. There are exceptions: when someone famous steps outside these bounds, we cut them slack. They are an authority on (fill in the blank), so it’s okay for them to be outside the box.
A great example of this is artists: if a disheveled and ranting homeless guy on the street plays amazing music, we discount it, but if a famous artist is disheveled and suffering from mental illness, we may say that’s the source of his creativity.
It’s important we’re aware of these biases. People around us likely want to express themselves in out-of-the-box ways, and if we’re unconsciously pushing them toward the middle of the bell curve, we’re missing out! Experiencing this “weirdness” enriches our lives and lets us know that it’s okay for us to be eclectic too. What I’m saying here is that it’s okay to be yourself. Being yourself encourages others to do the same, and that makes the world a better place for all of us!
Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s cloudy, cool and breezy this morning as a trough of low pressure moves east through BC, dragging marine clouds all the way to Hood River. Expect clouds this morning with more sun this afternoon. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the low 80’s later on with strong west wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow starts with low 60’s and climbs to the low 80’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate wind, lots of sunshine. No rainbows. Expect clear sky and sunshine on Saturday with temps in the low 60’s early and the upper 80’s in the afternoon. No wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks like Saturday until the afternoon, when the west wind will crank up. Still no rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking
There’s a slight chance of rain in the middle of next week. That seems worth reporting. In road biking news, tomorrow looks like light wind, Saturday looks very light, all day, if you can take mid-90’s, and Sunday morning looks relatively light.
