Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

When I woke up at 4 this morning (not the cat – not sure what, but I got to see a couple Perseid meteors, thanks), it was already windy. The gradients at 5am were .12 (pdx-dls), .02 (dls-psc) and .47 (eph-dls) with windspeeds already in the upper teens and mid twenties. Our weather picture today is complicated, and that’s going to make for a difficult forecast (even NOAA is saying that today!): there’s an upper level low starting to move inland, there’s a shortwave late, and we’re not so sure whether the atmosphere will destabilize.

That said, you can expect 22-25 this morning from Viento to Mosier with 12-15 from Lyle to Rufus. The wind will hold at that level through early afternoon. At that point, we’ll see a jump to 26-30 from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles by 5pm and then all the way to Arlington later. There’s a good chance the wind won’t last long near Hood River, so if you want to play windsports in the Corridor, jump on it. Otherwise, plan on Steven’s Locks or somewhere east of Mosier.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

Tomorrow just looks fucking windy all day long. The location of the fuckingest windiest wind will be east of the low clouds. That likely means east of Mosier. Expect 30+ all day long at the non-Corridor beach of your choice. If it’s cloudy in Steven’s Locks and Hood River, you’ll find gusty 16-19 there with periods of less wind and periods of more wind. The only monkey wrench tomorrow would be potential thunderstorms as an upper level low passes overhead. If that happens, all bets are off. So… get on the water early before the atmosphere has a chance to destabilize.

Saturday starts off with 20-23 and picks up to 23-26, strongest from Hood River to The Dalles. Sunday looks like W 10-13, but it may end up being a bit stronger, as models tend to underestimate this setup.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: Light, NW swell 3′ @ 7 seconds. Tomorrow: Light onshore, NW 4′ @ 8. Saturday: Light/15-20/30-35, NW 4 @ 7. Sunday also looks quite windy at the coast.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 22-25. Jones tomorrow, 10-13. Jones Saturday, 17-20. Sauvie’s today, nope. Sauvie’s tomorrow, nope again. Sauvie’s Saturday, 7-10.

Random Morning Thoughts

DSC_2698-3
If you are looking for more information on the Cougar Creek Fire, you will find it below in the events section. If you are looking for my rambling thoughts, you will find them here this morning and also interspersed throughout the report, including a couple of potty language words today.

That has nothing to do with what’s on my mind this morning. I’ve been thinking a lot about support lately. As someone who has no family support network, I’ve found support difficult to come by my whole life. Part of that, I think, is our culture; we expect people to “pick themselves up by their bootstraps” and “get on with life.” We shame people for accepting assistance – be that supplemental food income, unemployment compensation, welfare, or mental health help.

This, I think, makes people less likely to ask the government for help, and more importantly, it makes them less likely to ask friends for help.

But here’s the thing: we humans are communal animals. Back in the caveman days, we formed groups and supported each other so we could survive against the saber-toothed tigers. We formed groups so we could ask for support in raising our uber-difficult offspring (damned brains – they take so long to develop!).

We need community. We need support. We’re wired to need it, because receiving support from others is what led us to become the dominant species on the planet. So, next time you’re wanting support, ask for it from someone. And be kind to those who ask for support. Better yet, encourage people around you to ask you (and social service agencies) for help. Because the more we rely on each other, the stronger and more interconnected we become and the more resources we have to support those around us.

Despite what you’ve been told by American culture your whole life, you are not an individual. You are a member of a community. Your brain is wired for that. Embrace it, and you and the entire country shall thrive.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It was mostly clear with meteors (Perseids, actually) when I got up around 4 this morning. You’ll find a mostly clear day today until the afternoon, when we’ll see increasing high and mid clouds. There’s a chance of thunder and even precipitation late tonight. Temps will be in the low 70’s early and the low 90’s this afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks much cooler as an upper level low moves across the region. Expect partly cloudy weather with a chance of convection and showers early. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and mid 70’s (really!) in the afternoon. Nuking wind. 19% chance of rainbows. Expect a cool start to Saturday with temps in the upper 50’s. It’ll be partly cloudy early and sunny late, with highs in the low 80’s Moderate wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s still no news to report here, but it looks like the weekend will be less windy than the next few days, setting us up for some nice road biking. If you are a road biker, avoid the Forest Loop in Trout Lake as 1) you’ll likely get smoked out, and 2) parts of the 23 Road are closed. Glenwood loop could be interesting…

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include the weekly 8am yoga class (foundational flow style) at Flow – that’s free or by donation. The race-pace Post n’ Pint bike ride is tonight at Dirty Fingers at 5:30, and Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon has a community yoga class tonight at 6:30.

Tomorrow morning at 7 is the Kickstand Coffee Run, getting you a free cup of coffee and a donut for running 4 miles. Tomorrow night at dusk, the Princess Bride plays at Cascade Locks Movies in the Park. Tomorrow night at 7pm, the Seahawks play their pre-season opener against the Denver Broncos.

Coming up Saturday, there’s a Gorge Cup windsurfing race at the Event Site. This is the last one of the season, and will be followed by a Da Kine sponsored BBQ. At 5pm at the Hook on Saturday, it’s the King of the Hook, the annual longboard freestyle windsurfing contest. In non-windsurfing news, the Post Canyon 50k and half marathon is Saturday, as is the Skamania County Fair 5k/10k. At 7pm, Kickstand Coffee hosts the Post Canyon 50k afterparty, and at dusk, Jackson Park is the place to be for the movie Akeelah and the Bee.

Finally, if you’re making plans for the weekend, plan to avoid the Gifford Pinchot. The Cougar Creek fire has closed a bunch of roads and trails including the South Climb route on Mt. Adams, and parts of the 23 road.

If you want more Cougar Creek Fire information, you can find it on Inciweb and on the NWCC website, however, those appear to be less up to date than other news sources which are reporting the fire at approximately 9000 acres (up from 1200 24 hours ago).

Also, parts of 26 were closed yesterday due to a wildfire on the Warm Springs reservations, so if you are going to Bend, pick an alternate route.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
