Thursday. Wind, rainbows, and great dirt!

SteveSRainbow
This is going to be another tricky weekend of forecasting as an upper level low pressure system sits over the Northwest, sending clouds and rain and an unstable atmosphere into our wind forecasting picture. Today, Thursday, started off with solid gradients and solid wind: west .08 (pdx-dls) and W .11 (dls-psc). We’ll see 28-32 today east of the clouds, probably Avery to Arlington, with the strongest, steadiest, most relieable wind predicted to be from morning until 2pm. The western Gorge, from Stevenson to Hood River, will likely remain under the clouds, with gusty 13-16. The in-between section, Mosier to Doug’s, is a little trickier to forecast today. I suspect we’ll see periods of 23-26 with higher gusts, depending on the clouds and rain at any given moment. In other words, your best bet for steady wind is to drive further east. River temp is 58 degrees and flow is 234kcfs, just fine if you’re headed to the Rufus stretch. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Friday sees that upper low hanging out over southern Oregon, again impacting the reliability of the forecast and the quality of the wind. It looks like we’ll see W 10-13 from Stevenson to Doug’s early, a midday lull, and then 13-16 from Stevenson to Doug’s after 2pm.

Saturday also looks very hard to predict. Models say we’ll see a lot of wind, but they also say we’ll see a lot of rain. If you remember last weekend, you’ll remember that we had a similar situation. So, let’s call it rain and unpredictable wind in the morning. The afternoon looks to dry out a bit as that low pressure system moves east. Gusty 24-28 east of Mosier, or perhaps east of The Dalles, seems possible, perhaps even likely. Sunday currently looks like 15-18 in the morning and 28-32 in the afternoon, with the strongest wind east of Mosier.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’m going to keep telling you this, because I know you want to make trails better: Our local trails organization has agreed to provide the volunteers for the Cascadia Cup next weekend, and in exchange, the race organizers are offering up $8000 for our trails. So, we need volunteers! Sign up here, now. Looking to ride? Get the complete list of open trails here.

It’s sprinkling out there this morning and will continue to sprinkle and/or rain on and off for the next four days. You know what that means? Perfect dirt. We had .07” last night, enough to have an impact in Post. Now, remember, there’s an enduro race there this weekend, so you’ll be routed off certain trails (I have no idea which ones). It may be better to ride elsewhere. A reminder: NO DOGS on Hospital Hill until the cattle are gone, so do not take your dog riding with you while you’re avoiding the Enduro crowds. Also, Knebal Springs is open. 8 Mile is not.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include pickleball at May Street Elementary at 5:15, the weekly Post n’ Pint ride turned shuttle this week at 5:30, Community yoga at 6 at Yoga Samadhi, Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30, and free Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30. Coming up tomorrow morning at 7, Kickstand Coffee gives you a free cup of coffee and a donut for jogging 4 miles.

Coming up this weekend, North Sports in Bingen has a big watersports yard sale happening on Saturday from 9 to 3 and Windance is hosting a swap on Sunday morning.

Other events this weekend included the Cascadia Dirt Cup Enduro in Post Canyon both days and the Dog River Super D on Sunday. Dirty Fingers has free Devici demos for the next four days, and they’re hosting a superhero themed costume party Saturday night.

Have an awesome day today!
