Thursday. Wind, rain and rainbows!

It’s Thursday morning, and whitecaps are ruffling the river if you know where to look. At 7am, the gradients were .09 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc). In case you’re curious, river flow at The Dalles this morning was 117kcfs and river temps was 66 degrees. Continued after the chart… Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

The wind will quickly build as the temps warm today, setting up a happy day on the river for fall-fearful kiteboarders and windsurfers. Expect a chilly 20-23 from Viento to Swell this morning with single digits at Steven’s Locks and low teens from Mosier eastward. By late morning or early afternoon, we should be seeing 26-30 from Viento all the way to Arlington. Steven’s Locks will likely top out in the low twenties.

Friday sees a weather system move in. Rain will fall in the western Gorge. In advance of that system, we’ll see morning westerlies at 12-15 pretty much everywhere from Steven’s Locks to Arlington. As the clouds pile up and the raindrops fall, the wind will die off to light and variable in the afternoon, or perhaps W 5-10.

Saturday sees high pressure build in for a wind direction transition day. Expect W 5-10 to start the day followed by a switch to light and variable or light east wind in the afternoon. Sunday (from this long vantage point), looks like east wind at 20-25.

Random Morning Thoughts

No time for reflecting today. I’m spending the time drinking my coffee and staring at the Gorge. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

I went and inspected Post the day before yesterday, and it had already returned to dustiness. That’s how you know fire season isn’t over – the tack doesn’t stick around. It’s probably the same story on the 44 Road, where the dust was deeper, but maybe Gunsight. This is the time of year to start getting in your high elevation rides before they are gone! And remember: Hospital Hill and Whoopdee are still closed due to fire danger. Please don’t trespass.

Upcoming Events

What day is it? Oh, right, it’s Thursday. Tonight is the Post n’ Pint ride, moved to 5pm due to Darkness. There’s community yoga at 6pm at Yoga Samadhi, Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30, and Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6:30. Friday morning at 7 is the Kickstand Coffee donut and coffee run, where jogging four miles earns you more calories than you burn off.

I don’t have any outside-the box events on my calendar this weekend, which doesn’t mean there aren’t any. I just haven’t heard about them. So… enjoy the sunny weekend!

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
