Gorge Wind Forecast
Westerly gradients combine with a rather complicated weather setup for a few days. Given the slight chance of thunder and the higher chances of afternoon rain showers, you’ll want to chase the wind early. Let’s look at Thursday. Offshore high pressure combines with low pressure moving into BC and low pressure over Nevada and Idaho for an overall good setup. Unfortunately, that inland low will create wind shear and surface-based thunder chances this afternoon. Early gradients of .10 and .06 are driving westerlies in the 18-25 range from Stevenson to Swell with 12-15 in the eastern Gorge. By late morning, we should have 26-29 from Mosier to Rufus with east of Rufus and up and down 18-23 west of Mosier. As the day heats up, instability develops. Forecast reliability drops to zero this afternoon as any given location has a 10% chance of thunder, rain, and/or small hail. River flow: 150kcfs. River temp: 55F. High temp: 61F.
Looking at Friday, we have another cool, cloudy day. Offshore high pressure remains in place as does the inland low. Surface flow will be westerly, and upper flow will be northerly or northeasterly. Not ideal, but not a deal-breaker either. The day starts with 12-15 from Stevenson to Arlington. By midday, the wind rises to 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 12-15 east of The Dalles. It appears the wind will keep rising and max out at 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus with 10-13 in the western Gorge in the afternoon and 13-16 in the eastern Gorge. High temp: 65F.
On Saturday, a broad ridge (high pressure) offshore combines with low pressure over the inland NW and Nevada for another day of onshore flow. The eastern Gorge looks particularly susceptible to instability and possible thunder in the afternoon, so the western Gorge will be your sweet spot. Morning wind will be 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-13 east of there. Midday: 24-28 from Stevenson to Avery with 10-13 in the eastern Gorge. That wind holds through mid-afternoon, after which models hint at a steep decline in wind speed coupled with thunder or rain possible east of Rufus. High temp: 67F. Westerlies keep on going Sunday and Monday with models suggesting mid to upper 20’s both days.
