Underneath this morning’s sunrise, there was a Dawn Patrol set of whitecaps unicorning (to unicorn: to move downwind while creating white froth on the river) through the Gorge. Wind speeds at dawn were in the teens and low 20’s, driven by gradients of .08 (pdx-dls) and .06 (dls-psc). River temp was 69 degrees, flow at The Dalles Dam was 74.1kcfs, and 32446 Chinook and 4084 Steelhead made it past Bonneville yesterday. Tangent: maybe today would be a good day to go to the fish ladder at Bonneville. It would also be a good day to stop by the fish stand at Windance to pick up some salmon. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
Anyway, a weak weather system is going to swing through this morning, always a good sign for wind, but never a good sign for high-quality, steady, reliable wind. Expect 13-16 most places first thing this morning with low 20’s at Swell and Arlington. As the day goes on, high pressure will build off the coast and the weather system will clear the area. That will leave us with 23-26 from Viento to Rufus this afternoon with 18-22 at Steven’s Locks. Arlington is a bit of a wild card today. Let’s call it 23-26 early with a midday fade.
A ridge of high pressure builds in for Friday, setting us up for a sunny, warm, east wind day. We’ll have calm to light wind first thing in the morning. That’ll be followed by a burst of E 15-20 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and Steven’s Locks (Stevenson and Cascade Locks). The rest of the Gorge will max out at east 5-8, enough for excellent road biking conditions.

Saturday starts out with high pressure across the region. A trough of low pressure approaching in the afternoon will ramp up the wind. Expect zero to light wind to start the day Saturday followed by 25-29 in the afternoon from Steven’s Locks to Arlington. As often happens in these situations, Swell is likely to be good for 90 minutes, followed by a dropoff. More likely to last longer: Steven’s Locks, Mosier, Avery, Arlington.
Sunday’s a long ways out still, but models currently suggest Dawn Patrol at 21-24+ followed by a quick fade. I’m not sure I’m buying either the early morning wind speed – that seems to contradict with a forecast low of 49 degrees – or the afternoon die off – that conflicts with super-strong high pressure in the Pacific. So, anyway, it does look windy on Sunday, but I’m not really sure how windy or at what time of day.

Random Morning Thoughts
Living is a complex process, as you may have noticed. Our minds, in service of keeping us moving, take shortcuts. Rather than evaluating every experience as “new”, our minds link current events to past situations. Automatic responses arise. For example, you’re in one of those long lines at Safeway’s checkout, and you automatically get irritated at being in line, having to wait, wasting time, you’ve got better stuff to do…
Believe it or not, we can change our automatic responses, and thus our internal experience of any given situation. How? Conscious effort, my friends. Just as you can program your muscles to automatically adjust to changing wind conditions, you can program your mind to give you a desired response.
To make this happen, you have to learn to “pause”. Pick a common situation in your life that gives rise to an unpleasant response (anger, irritation, loneliness). Next time you’re in that situation feeling that emotion, stop. Name what’s happening – “I’m standing in a long line at the grocery store and I’m irritated”, for example. Choose an alternative. “I’m standing in a long line at the grocery store, and I’m relaxing because I don’t have to do anything else right now.” Consciously notice the line and relax your body.
Do this each time you notice irritation. The irritation might not go away, but the next time you’re in that line, you’re more likely to have relaxation arise. Do this thing you’ve chosen each time you’re in the situation you’ve chosen, and you’ll find your preferred response arising more often. #mindhack Have an awesome day!
