Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

The weather intensity ramps up for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, and so does the wind, at least when and where it’s not raining! Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday all look windy enough to get you on the river. Find a fun downpour activity for Saturday, and you’ll be set for the next five days.

Let’s look at Thursday: nothing at all is happening on the river to start the day. It’s perfect out there for flat water, no-wind activities. Don’t bank on that holding for the entire day. Around noon, as a front pushes inland, the wind will pick up. Expect gusty 17-20 between Viento and Doug’s to start the fun. Stevenson: 10-14 or so, going to light westerlies when the rain hits. The incoming weather system nudges the wind up elsewhere: we should see a short-lived period of gusty 24-28 from Swell to Doug’s before rain arrives. The wind takes one look at the rain and moves east: between 5pm and 8pm, you’ll find a few hours of gusty 25-29 or a bit more between The Dalles and Threemile. Drizzle arrives in Hood River after 5pm and shuts down the wind. River flow is 204kcfs, river temp is 53F, and high temp forecast is 74F.

Friday will be drizzly with light westerlies in the western Gorge; the wind stays at 11-14 or less as far east as Mosier. After noon, head somewhere between Lyle and Boardman for 24-27 through the evening. High temp: 66F. Saturday will be very wet, so wet that you won’t even be thinking about wind sports! That’s good, as the day starts calm, peaks with E 15-20 at Rooster for a few hours ahead of the most intense period of rain, and then goes calm again in the afternoon. High temp: 59F.

Details for Sunday aren’t quite clear, but they do involve an unseasonably strong low coming onshore somewhere between Oceanside and North Bend. Offshore high pressure builds behind this low. If the timing works out, we’ll end up with westerlies in the upper 20’s to low 30’s Sunday afternoon. That timing happens to be excellent for at least one thing: CGW2 has a swap meet on Sunday at Lot 1 on the Hood River Waterfront. Sellers can arrive as early as 7am. Buyers: 8am. Offshore high pressure combines with lower pressure inland for another day of 26-30ish on Memorial Day. Not a bad weekend. Chilly and wet, but also windy most days. Enjoy!

Jones, Sauvie’s, Coast

Coast forecast (north/central/south, waves). Swell forecast provided by NWS. Wind direction northerly unless otherwise noted. Thursday: SW5/SW5/SW10-15, W swell 4′ at 8 seconds. Friday: SW5-10/LTW/LTV, W 8′ @ 10. Saturday: variable to 30-40 entire coast, W 4′ @ 8. Jones Thursday: calm. Friday: 5-10. Saturday: 15-18 > 5pm. Sauvie’s Thursday-Saturday: nothin’.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

CGW2 has a swap meet on Sunday, 5/29 at Lot 1 near the Hood River Event Site. $10 for sellers. They can arrive as early as 7am. Buyers come at 8am. CGW2 needs volunteers to help set things up.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle on Sunday at 11am at the Event Site. The Dirty Fingers Sunday Service rides happens at 9am – this week is the last one. They are fast-paced. If you are not, bring a buddy. The ride is followed by bike race viewing and beer drinking at the shop. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride.

Cycling

There was an event on 5/22 on Dog River trail, which suggests it may be open. That’s not confirmed. A good portion of the Eldorado Trail (below the intersection with Riorden Hills Road (near the top, below the clearcut) is closed starting today for at least the next few days. Do not enter that area for your safety. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
